‘He’s a Real…’: Andrew Garfield Talks About His Experience with Mel Gibson While Working on Hacksaw Ridge

As a dedicated follower of the art of cinema, I have had the privilege to witness the transformation and growth of many talented individuals throughout my years as a spectator. Andrew Garfield‘s recent show of support for Mel Gibson is a testament to the power of redemption and the capacity for change that lies within each of us.

Andrew Garfield, who collaborated with Mel Gibson in the 2016 hit movie “Hacksaw Ridge,” expressed his admiration for the actor-director. Recognizing Gibson’s outstanding skills in cinema, Garfield praised him as a “remarkable filmmaker” whose talent merits continued opportunities to create more iconic films.

In addition to his role as The Amazing Spider-Man, he also shared that Gibson possesses a heart filled with compassion and has taken the time to heal personally, focusing on self-improvement.

During an interview with PEOPLE, the actor from The Social Network revealed that he and Mel Gibson engaged in numerous discussions prior to working together on their 2016 project.

For those not familiar, Gibson was recorded making anti-Semitic remarks during a 2006 DUI arrest. In discussing their collaboration with Mad Max’s star, Garfield shared his belief that individuals possess the capacity to heal from past mistakes and that people can evolve over time, receiving help when needed.

He then stated, “I learned that everyone deserves respect. And that people deserve second chances, third chances, fourth chances. That none of us are infallible.”

Regarding Gibson’s directing skills, Garfield expressed that Gibson possesses a keen sense of right and wrong, a filmmaker who not only understands but also emotionally connects with the film, and someone who would emerge from behind the screen with tear-filled eyes.

He had my complete faith, and he’s an incredibly emotional storyteller, able to truly experience the feelings he portrays. In essence, he’s so empathetic that it seems as if he can’t help but feel deeply, as the We Live in Time actor put it.

Previously, when Mel Gibson was apprehended for driving under the influence, he expressed his apologies. He added that such behavior had no justification and emphasized that intolerance towards anyone harboring anti-Semitic beliefs is unacceptable.

In my perspective as a lifestyle expert, I find myself captivated by the extraordinary movie, Hacksaw Ridge. This riveting tale centers around Desmond Doss, portrayed brilliantly by Andrew Garfield, an unforgettable figure from World War II. He was not just any soldier; he was a hero.

In his unit, a particular soldier had the reputation as the battlefield healer. Interestingly, despite being in the military, he was an advocate for peace, choosing not to bear arms during his deployment, as depicted in the film.

Additionally, the film featured not only Tom Holland (who starred in Spider-Man: No Way Home), but also actors like Luke Bracey, Sam Worthington, Teresa Palmer, along with Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving, and other well-known personalities.
