As a long-time MCU fan who’s been following this universe since its inception, I must admit, this year’s SDCC left me feeling a bit like a kid on a sugar rush – exhilarated yet slightly disoriented. The shift from ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has certainly stirred up emotions. While I understand the need for change, I can’t help but feel that we’re missing out on a proper conclusion to Kang’s story. It’s like finding your favorite book unfinished and the author decided to start a new one without resolving the cliffhanger.
As a die-hard MCU fan, this year’s SDCC didn’t disappoint! One of the most intriguing announcements was about ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty.’ It seems there’s been a change in plans, and instead of Kang the Conqueror being the main antagonist, the movie is now titled ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ I can hardly wait to see what this shift means for our heroes!
In the second slot, it’s been announced that Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom, a decision that’s sparked a range of responses. Many supporters argue that casting RDJ as Doom is not ideal, especially since they were hoping for a satisfying conclusion to the Kang storyline.
Fans have expressed doubts about Doctor Doom because his introduction wasn’t properly set up. In contrast, Kang the Conqueror (also known as Timely or He Who Remains) has been gradually developed across three productions – ‘Loki’ Seasons 1 & 2 and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’. This extensive buildup is now being concluded. However, it seems unfair to wrap up Kang’s story so abruptly, especially without resolving his arc completely within the MCU. It would feel strange if he were not mentioned again in the future.
A significant issue that has arisen is the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Some fans struggle to envision him beyond his legendary portrayal of Iron Man, particularly following the selfless demise of his character in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Despite other gifted actors being proposed for Doctor Doom, some view his selection as a sign of desperation by the production team.
On one hand, fans now anticipate a connection between Doom and Iron Man in the MCU, which some view as a sign of creative stagnation. Conversely, making no connection between the two characters only adds to the oddity of the casting.
