Here’s The Status of Every STAR TREK TV Series and Movie

As a die-hard Trekkie who has spent countless hours navigating the cosmos of Starfleet and its various branches, I am thrilled to see such a diverse array of upcoming projects that promise to expand the universe we all love. The idea of Form 31 operating in the shadows is intriguing, and I can’t help but wonder if they’ll ever cross paths with my beloved Enterprise crew.

For nearly sixty years, the Star Trek franchise has been thriving on both TV and film. But it has especially flourished in the streaming era, with the Paramount+ shows of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 and Star Trek: Picard in 2020. Discovery and Picard are both done now. So where does that leave the franchise going into the immediate future? Here is the current status of every Star Trek TV series and movie.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

In the follow-up, yet prequel to “Discovery,” Anson Mount portrays Captain Pike, recounting the exploits of the starship “Enterprise” prior to Kirk taking command. This series has garnered significant acclaim among “Star Trek” enthusiasts, perhaps more than any other contemporary “Trek” production. The third season premieres in early 2025, with a fourth season already confirmed for filming in the beginning of next year, likely to air in 2026.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

A popular series among fans is the animated show Star Trek: Lower Decks, that made its debut in 2020. This series follows the exploits of the lower-ranking crew members on the Cerritos. Regrettably, its fifth season will be its last one. The final season of this “least significant vessel in Starfleet” premieres on Paramount+ on October 24.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Initially planned as a joint production between Nickelodeon and Paramount+, the animated series Prodigy is set in the 24th century following the storyline after the events of Star Trek: Voyager. It initially aired its first season on Paramount+, but was unfortunately canceled after a year. However, Netflix took over the almost finished second season, which is now available to stream there. Let’s hope that the viewership has been strong enough for a third season filled with fresh adventures for the young crew of the U.S.S. Protostar.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

After numerous whispers for years, it’s now underway: A “Starfleet Academy” series is being filmed. This new series is a spin-off of “Discovery,” set in its future time period of the 32nd century. Leading the cast is Holly Hunter, portraying both the Captain and Commandant of the Academy. Paul Giamatti takes on the role of the main antagonist, while fresh talents represent the latest batch of Starfleet trainees. “Starfleet Academy” aims for a 2025 premiere on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Section 31

The initial plan for Star Trek: Section 31 was to develop it as a series. However, after Michelle Yeoh received an Academy Award and her commitments increased significantly, the project underwent a transformation. Now, it will be a standalone film, centering around Yeoh’s character from Discovery, who used to be Empress Phillipa Georgiou in the Mirror Universe. In Star Trek folklore, Section 31 represents a clandestine division within the Federation, responsible for carrying out Starfleet’s covert operations, some of which can be quite dubious. We anticipate that this movie will be released on Paramount+ around 2025.

Untitled Star Trek Comedy Series

At Comic-Con 2024, it was revealed that a new live-action comedy based on Star Trek is in development by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien. Notably, Newsome stars as Mariner in Lower Decks, while Simien penned Dear White People and directed Haunted Mansion last year. This upcoming series will focus on characters who are outsiders within the Federation, working on a sparkling resort planet. Unbeknownst to them, their adventures are being used for entertainment across the entire quadrant. As of now, there is no confirmed production or release date for this show.

Star Trek Prequel Film

Toby Haynes, known for his work on “Andor,” is set to direct the upcoming “Star Trek” movie, with Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script. The story reportedly revolves around humans encountering aliens, a pivotal event that sets the stage for the future depicted in “Star Trek.” However, it won’t be named “First Contact,” as that title is already taken. As of now, Paramount has not disclosed a production start date or release window. The plan is to give this film a theatrical release, but it’s not the only “Star Trek” project in development.

Star Trek 4 (a.k.a. Star Trek 14)

For nearly eight years, plans have been underway for another movie featuring J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot cast, including Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Since the announcement following Star Trek Beyond in 2016, this project has gone through several writers and at least three different directors. Recent news reveals that Paramount has recruited Steve Yockey, a co-creator of the TV series The Flight Attendant, to pen the screenplay. This upcoming film is intended as the concluding installment of the Kelvin timeline series.

Star Trek: Legacy

Although never officially confirmed, there’s been a strong fan demand for it. After the highly successful third season of Star Trek: Picard, showrunner Terry Matalas hinted at a new series in the finale, titled Star Trek: Legacy. This spin-off would continue the exploits of the renamed Enterprise-G, with Captain Seven of Nine at the helm. Matalas has even disclosed the title, and both the cast and Matalas are eager to proceed. However, Paramount has yet to give the green light.
