Here Is Why ‘The Penguin’ Recast One of Reeves’ Major Villains for the Show

As a fan who has been following Batman lore for over three decades, I must say that The Penguin series is a breath of fresh air. Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot surpassed all expectations, and it was only fitting that HBO would greenlight a spin-off. The debut episode on September 19, 2024, was nothing short of spectacular, with the world-building and character development being top-notch.

There was uncertainty among some fans when it was announced that Colin Farrell would play Oswald Cobblepot, or The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”. Since Farrell didn’t initially seem to fit the character, fans were hesitant about how he’d portray the role. However, the costume design team did an outstanding job, and Farrell turned out to be a fantastic villain. In fact, HBO moved so quickly that they ordered a standalone series focusing on The Penguin.

Under the title The Penguin, this television series made its premiere on September 19, 2024. It’s been met with overwhelming acclaim from both fans and critics alike. They’ve hailed it as an exceptional demonstration of world-building and a commendable continuation of Reeves’ cinematic work. The acting performances have also received high praise, suggesting that the vision Reeves has for the Batman universe is indeed materializing effectively.

One of the most buzzed-about elements in the series right now is the cast, and you might recall that just a short while ago, we shared news about Mark Strong joining the series in a significant role. It’s since been confirmed that he will portray none other than Carmine Falcone, and here’s the explanation for why John Turturro’s character has had to be re-cast for the show.

If you recall, there was a rumor on personal trainer Giacomo Farci’s Instagram account. He posted pictures of Strong from a training session and someone asked if these photos were for Strong’s preparation for the TV series The Penguin. Farci confirmed that he had trained Mark for it. This was the first hint about Strong joining the show, although we initially assumed he might play Roman Sionis. However, it appears he will be portraying a different character than expected. Yet, our assumption proved correct in one aspect.

Specifically, Mark Strong portrays a younger Carmine Falcone in the series, which was initially considered a possibility but later deemed unlikely. However, John Turturro’s age could be disguised with minimal makeup, given his relatively straightforward appearance in “The Batman”. This suggests that Turturro might have convincingly played a younger Carmine Falcone without much difficulty. However, he was ultimately replaced, and showrunner Lauren LeFranc has provided an explanation: he was recast.

Essentially, John was unable to join us due to scheduling issues. However, we’re ecstatic about having Mark Strong on board instead. I believe he delivers an exceptional performance. Initially, one might think, “Oh, I’m accustomed to John Turturro from The Batman,” but let me assure you, John is a fantastic actor. Yet, the weight and uniqueness that Mark Strong brings to his role as Carmine Falcone is remarkable. By the end of the episode, I hope you’ll be fully immersed in his portrayal, thinking, “That’s Carmine Falcone,” and appreciating what he contributes to it.

It’s clear that Turturro didn’t get fired; instead, it seems he wasn’t able to attend (perhaps his commitments on Severance might have been the reason). However, Mark Strong is a fantastic substitute, and since he’s portraying a younger version of the character, the storyline continuity stays consistent.
