October brings a wave of exciting new releases, including stories based on classic books, a complete science fiction series, and some hidden international films. Whether you enjoy spooky tales like Shirley Jackson’s work, suspenseful mysteries set on yachts, heartwarming Brazilian dramas, or quirky Japanese comedies about family, there’s plenty to watch this month.
Here’s a list of all the new titles available this week, from October 6th to October 12th. We’ve included a brief description of each project and the people working on it, along with the release date so you can start watching right away.
‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’ (2019)
This gothic mystery, based on Shirley Jackson’s 1962 novel, tells the story of sisters Merricat and Constance Blackwood, who live a secluded life with their Uncle Julian following a family tragedy and the continued distrust of their town. Their quiet existence is disrupted when their cousin Charles arrives, bringing long-hidden secrets to light. Directed by Stacie Passon, with a screenplay by Mark Kruger, the film stars Taissa Farmiga, Alexandra Daddario, Crispin Glover, and Sebastian Stan. It will be released on October 7th.
As a film fan, I was really struck by how the cinematography, handled by Piers McGrail, and Andrew Hewitt’s tense score, perfectly captured the feeling of being trapped and unsure of what’s real, just like the book. The core of the story – this battle between the newcomers and the mysterious Blackwood family – unfolds slowly, really digging into themes of power and just trying to stay alive. It’s a solid 96-minute watch, and a big thanks to producers Jared Ian Goldman, Robert Mitas, and Kieran Corrigan for bringing it to life.
‘Caramelo’ (2025)
A talented chef’s life takes an unexpected turn when he receives a serious diagnosis. But things start to look up when a charming, caramel-colored stray dog unexpectedly enters his life. The film, directed and co-written by Diego Freitas (known for ‘Beyond the Universe’), stars Rafael Vitti, along with Ademara Barros, Roger Gobeth, Noemia Oliveira, and Carolina Ferraz. It will be available to watch starting Wednesday, October 8th.
This film is inspired by the heartwarming story of Brazil’s street dogs, known as “vira-lata caramelo,” who have become national favorites. It combines a personal journey with this growing cultural appreciation for mixed-breed dogs, focusing on themes of friendship, strength, and new beginnings. Iafa Britz produced the film, with Kauê Zilli handling the cinematography and Carolina Castro and Rod Azevedo contributing to the screenplay.
‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ (2015)
The Maze Runner continues with ‘The Scorch Trials,’ where Thomas and his friends escape WCKD and journey across a dangerous, destroyed landscape called the Scorch. They’re searching for a rebel group known as the Right Arm. Directed by Wes Ball and starring Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, this film is based on the novel by James Dashner. It will be released on October 9th.
Filmed by Gyula Pados and featuring music by John Paesano, this movie builds on the existing world of the series with dangerous infected people called “Cranks,” deserted cities, and lawless settlements. The film is produced by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Lee Stollman, and Joe Hartwick Jr. Dan Zimmerman, who also edited the first film, returns to maintain the fast-paced action throughout the 131-minute story.
‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ (2018)
The final film in the Glader trilogy follows Thomas and his fellow survivors as they embark on their most perilous mission yet: infiltrating the Last City to save their friends and finally face off against WCKD. Wes Ball returns as director, with a screenplay by T.S. Nowlin based on the novel by James Dashner. The movie stars familiar faces like Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Ki Hong Lee, alongside new additions Nathalie Emmanuel and Walton Goggins. It will be released on Thursday, October 9th.
Gyula Pados handled the cinematography, and John Paesano composed the music, completing the core creative team alongside producers Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Joe Hartwick Jr., Wes Ball, and Lee Stollman. Filming was temporarily halted due to an injury to director Francis Lawrence, but it later resumed and finished, resulting in a 143-minute final film.
‘The Maze Runner’ (2014)
The film follows Thomas, who suddenly appears in a mysterious place called the Glade with no memory of his past. He finds himself among a group of boys all working together to survive and find a way out of a dangerous, ever-changing maze guarded by terrifying creatures called Grievers. Directed by Wes Ball in his first feature film, and based on the novel by James Dashner, the movie stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter, Ki Hong Lee, and Patricia Clarkson. It will be released on October 9th.
With support from Temple Hill and Gotham Group, the movie’s focused, suspenseful plot introduced the larger story about WCKD and the Flare virus. John Paesano created the music, Enrique Chediak was the cinematographer, and Dan Zimmerman edited the film, which has a runtime of 113 minutes and kicked off the franchise internationally.
‘Swim to Me’ (2025)
This Chilean drama unfolds during a restless summer and tells the story of Estela, a young housekeeper who moves to Santiago. She develops a close relationship with the girl in her care, but their connection is tested by the realities of social class. The film stars María Paz Grandjean, Rosa Puga Vittini, and Ignacia Baeza, and will be released on October 10th.
This Chilean drama, based on a novel, is a coming-of-age story that explores themes of class and caring. It intimately follows the lives of two people whose paths cross despite their different backgrounds. The full-length film has a trailer available now.
‘Nouvelle Vague’ (2025)
Richard Linklater’s new film is a black-and-white tribute to the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s classic 1959 film, ‘Breathless.’ Guillaume Marbeck stars as Godard, with Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. The film shows how the fast-paced, unconventional production of ‘Breathless’ helped launch the French New Wave movement. It will be released on Friday, October 10th.
I was so excited to see the credits listed Holly Gent and Vincent Palmo alongside Linklater – it felt like a really collaborative effort. The film actually premiered at Cannes in 2025, which was huge, and then it’s getting released here in the fall. From everything I’ve read and seen, it’s being described as a real love letter to classic cinema, but it’s also a fascinating look behind the scenes at people like producer Georges de Beauregard and cinematographer Raoul Coutard, and the whole group around Godard and Truffaut. It sounds incredible!
‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ (2025)
I’m so excited for this new thriller! It’s based on the popular book by Ruth Ware and follows a travel journalist named Lo Blacklock, played by Keira Knightley. She thinks she sees someone pushed overboard on a fancy cruise, but everyone insists no one is missing. Simon Stone is directing, and the cast is amazing – Guy Pearce, Hannah Waddingham, Kaya Scodelario, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and more! It’s coming out on October 10th, and I’ve already marked my calendar!
The screenplay is by Stone, along with Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse. Recent reports from a special screening have focused on the contributions of Ware and Keira Knightley’s portrayal of Lo’s determined but anxious character. Ben Davis handled the cinematography, and the music was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch.
‘My Father, the BTK Killer’ (2025)
This documentary tells the story of Dennis Rader, the BTK Killer, through the eyes of his daughter, Kerri Rawson. It combines old footage with new interviews to reveal the shocking double life of a man who seemed like an ordinary scout leader and father, but secretly terrorized Wichita for years. Skye Borgman, known for ‘Abducted in Plain Sight,’ directed the film, and Ross M. Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans of Campfire Studios produced it. It will be released on Friday, October 10th.
This documentary tells the story of the BTK murders, from when the crimes happened to how the killer, Rader, contacted the media, and finally, how he was caught – a revelation that shocked those who knew him. It will be 93 minutes long and available on Netflix, and director Joe Bergmann has chosen to focus the story on the experiences of investigator Kevin Rawson.
‘Typhoon Family’ (2019)
Masahide Ichii’s darkly funny crime drama, also called ‘The Stormy Family’, tells the story of four siblings who come back together after years apart when their parents – bank robbers who disappeared – are presumed dead. They initially gather to sort out the inheritance and plan a funeral, but end up confronting old grudges and uncovering secrets from the past. The film stars Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Machiko Ono, Tomoya Nakamura, Rumi Sakakibara, Mahiru Koda, and Hirofumi Arai, and will be released on Saturday, October 11th.
Ichii both wrote and directed this film, creating a story that combines family drama with the excitement of a heist movie. It runs 108 minutes and was released in Japan by Kino Films. Film reviews highlight its blend of crime, comedy, and drama as the story follows siblings dealing with the consequences of their parents’ past crime and a long period of being separated.
