Here are 13 of the Funniest Horror-Comedy Films in Existence

As a lifelong fan of horror and comedy, I’ve seen my fair share of films that try to blend these genres. However, none have left me as impressed, entertained, and overall satisfied as the top three picks on this list.

Halloween is often associated with notorious psychopaths such as Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees. However, this season isn’t just about fear and serial killers; it’s also about enjoying yourself! And what encapsulates the spooky season better than horror-comedies? If you prefer laughter over screams, here are some recommendations for you. For those seeking humor-laden horror movies, these 13 films are among the funniest ever produced.

13. Death Becomes Her

The chilling proposition: Two long-time rivals, struggling to preserve their youthful appearances, seek an ancient witch’s curse for eternal life. However, their wish comes true with disastrous consequences, as they discover that living forever might be less desirable than the alternative of death.

It’s quite amusing indeed to watch them grasp that concept, as shown in the movie “Death Becomes Her,” starring Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep, and Bruce Willis. This film is nothing short of campy brilliance. The performances are outstanding, bolstered by a sharp, humorous script and ingenious visual jokes.

12. Gremlins 2: The New Batch

From my perspective as a thrilled enthusiast: I find myself shuddering at the thought of malevolent, sorcerous creatures unleashing their dreadful powers within a towering New York City skyscraper.

The film “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” might be the most outrageously funny movie on this selection. To clarify, we mean it in a positive manner. After his successful release of the 1984 horror-comedy blend that leaned more towards horror than comedy, director Joe Dante decided to create an unbridled film filled with humor. This sequel is devoid of any actual frightening moments, but it’s so incredibly absurd it led to a legendary “Key & Peele” sketch. In essence, “Gremlins 2” can be likened to the imagination of a madman.

11. One Cut of the Dead

In a chilling twist: A director in dire straits resorts to using genuine undead creatures for his zombie flick, aiming to achieve authenticity and economize. However, the situation swiftly turns from reel to real as events take an alarming turn for the worse.

This low-cost Japanese zombie-comedy movie, titled “One Cut of the Dead,” cleverly revolves around the production of a similar low-budget film in Japan. It’s not only one of the most original horror-comedy productions, but it’s also incredibly funny. The plot within a plot unfolds as the fictional cast and crew become real zombies, who in turn are incorporated into their own movie. This film stands out for its intelligence, creativity, and numerous layers of humor embedded within its complex narrative structure.

10. Night of the Comet

In the aftermath of a comet’s destruction, leaving few survivors on Earth, two resilient teenage girls find themselves in a struggle against hordes of zombies and sinister scientists, battling for their own survival and that of humanity.

1984’s modest budget sci-fi comedy-horror flick, “Night of the Comet,” might catch some off guard, but those who have seen it won’t be surprised at its inclusion. This film skillfully blends humor and intelligence to produce a timeless, amusing masterpiece that is as much entertaining as it is thought-provoking. Not only does it belong on this list, it’s a must-watch for any B-movie enthusiast who appreciates quality films.

9. Ready or Not

Instead of enjoying her honeymoon bliss, a newlywed finds herself battling for survival as her husband’s haunted kin compel her to engage in a lethal game within their ancestral manor.

In a clever blend of humor and horror, “Ready or Not” stands out as a unique take on the genre. Featuring Samara Weaving in a captivating role, this film manages to deliver sharp social commentary while also providing laughs – often by employing slapstick humor that revolves around the violent and grotesque aspects of its setting, a haunted mansion where the unfortunate members of an affluent family meet their untimely demise in amusingly grisly ways.

8. Ravenous

The chilling scenario: In the 9th century, soldiers posted at a remote military base face an alarming assault. The assailant, a bloodthirsty cannibal, is bent on conflict, seeking fresh victims to satiate his hunger for human flesh.

The concept of “Ravenous” seems to promise an outstanding blend of horror and Western genres. Despite this, it manages to deliver a witty black comedy without compromising on gruesome elements or fear factors. One aspect that truly stands out about “Ravenus” is its humor becoming more appealing the more you watch it, which is a clear indicator of a top-notch horror-comedy production.

7. Seed of Chucky

The chilling plot twist: Two reanimated vengeful puppets set their sights on Hollywood, determined to halt the production of a film based on their gruesome past.

In contrast to other long-lasting horror series that often transition into comedies unintentionally, the film “Seed of Chucky” stands out as it deliberately combines horror and comedy elements throughout. What sets it apart is its exceptional humor, making it truly hilarious. The movie features Jennifer Tilly playing herself in a story where Chucky and Tiffany, who are brought back to life by their offspring Glen/Glenda, are characters in the film. Incredibly entertaining until the end, the climax of the story somehow manages to surpass its initial brilliance.

6. Trick ‘r Treat

The horror pitch: The terror of Halloween comes to life across five twisted stories of death and mayhem set during the spookiest night of the year.

In an ideal world, Michael Dougherty would be working on his seventh or eighth “Trick ‘r Treat” movie right now, but since the universe seems to be taking its time, we at least get to rewatch his anthology classic every Halloween instead. Each of the film’s five segments delivers both chills and chuckles, making a strong case for it being among the scariest horror-comedies out there. However, we chose to categorize it as one of the funniest due to its ability to elicit hearty laughter that’s seldom found in black comedies.

5. This Is the End

Survival drama scenario: Well-known stars from the glamourous world of Hollywood find themselves stranded when the Rapture occurs. They must battle against demons, insanity, and their fellow survivors in a desperate attempt to endure the cataclysmic events marking the apocalypse.

In a fresh take, the movie titled “This Is the End” starring Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride could be considered scene-by-scene one of the funniest horror-comedies ever made. In this film, each character portrays a slightly exaggerated version of themselves, which leads to plenty of humor at their expense. As the situation becomes increasingly dire, the hilarity only intensifies.

4. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

As a gamer, let me rephrase it: “Me and my buddy, two peaceful dudes, just wanting a chill getaway in our woodland cabin, but some reckless college kids with a dark obsession are trying to drag us into their deadly cult, hoping we’ll join them in the great beyond.”

In the film “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil“, a familiar horror trope is creatively transformed into a hilarious masterpiece. The movie flips the roles of the protagonists and antagonists in a typical “terror in the woods” narrative. A chain of misunderstandings, unlucky events, and accidents cause a band of condescending college students to believe that two harmless locals are actually bloodthirsty murderers. The ensuing sequence is filled with both death and humor, resulting in a timeless horror-comedy classic that remains heartfelt and intelligent despite its comedic nature.

3. Army of Darkness

In a different timeline, a man finds himself transported and tasked with assisting a village in thwarting an army of undead soldiers. These soldiers are on a quest for the Book of the Dead, a malevolent tome, which, if opened, could summon horrific spirits that would wipe out the world of the living for good.

In simpler terms, Sam Raimi’s third Evil Dead movie, titled “Army of Darkness,” is a unique blend of horror and comedy, serving as a stark contrast to the original straight-up horror film. Bruce Campbell, in his role as Ash, delivers an uninhibited comedic performance throughout this battle against evil. As Ash travels back in time, he finds himself leading an army against reanimated dead bodies and skeletons. The second half of the movie boasts some of the funniest visuals in horror-comedy history, but what makes it even more amusing is how the skeleton soldiers converse like regular people.

2. Beetlejuice

In the spirit realm: A pair of spirits find themselves in an otherworldly journey, concurrently striving to assist a young girl residing in their former residence, while thwarting a malevolent demon’s intent to annihilate life forever.

As a gaming aficionado, let me tell you that Beetlejuice might seem like a straight-up comedy flick at first glance, but trust me, it’s got some genuinely chilling scenes that will send shivers down your spine. Yet, these spooky elements don’t deter Tim Burton’s masterpiece from grabbing the top spot on my list. Michael Keaton, the Ghost With the Most, steals the show with his hilarious antics as a bio-exorcist, but he’s not the only one cracking jokes in this movie. (How could he be when Catherine O’Hara is around?) The eerie Netherworld and its departed souls make for an unforgettable backdrop for visual gags, witty one-liners, and interactions that are just plain absurd.

Instead of just “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” we thought it would be nice to include a variety of funny movies, so we left it off this list.

1. Shaun of the Dead

As a Survivor in the Apocalypse: I find myself battling hordes of ravenous, zombified Londoners hungry for human flesh. My goal is to protect and guide my loved ones through this nightmare, seeking safety amidst the chaos.

Shaun of the Dead stands out as an exceptional blend of horror and comedy, consistently demonstrating creativity and excellence. It serves not only as a tribute to the best zombie movies ever made but also as a self-contained masterpiece in the genre. The film boasts a stellar cast, exceptional writing, and flawless direction. Every element – from words to shots to sequences – is perfectly crafted with no room for improvement. No accolade given to it is undeserved or excessive!

This movie is a flawless blend of terror and humor, arguably the funniest ever filmed. For that reason alone, it deserves the top spot on our list.
