As a seasoned horror enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that January 2025 is shaping up to be a thrilling month for all you ghoul-geeks out there! The upcoming releases promise a tantalizing mix of chills, spills, and unexpected twists that will keep even the most hardened horror aficionado on the edge of their seat.
Exploring the realm of terrifying films is both fascinating and dynamic, with George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” serving as a groundbreaking foundation for horror filmmakers such as John Carpenter, Wes Craven, and independent successes like “The Evil Dead.” Since its inception, this genre has been swiftly transforming and expanding.
What sparked the topic for this piece is the consistent flow of horror titles, even though not all of them reach mainstream popularity. In this article, we’ll be discussing some forthcoming releases that are set to hit the screens exceptionally soon.
In other words, this report will provide you with a lineup of upcoming horror movies set to premiere in January 2025. The roster includes both well-known and lesser-known titles, making it ideal for any horror movie enthusiast!
1. The Monster Beneath Us – January 3, 2025
This motion picture narrates the tale of a mother whose son claims he’s made a new subterranean companion residing in their rural home’s basement. At first, she harbors no suspicions, but as she observes her child increasingly spending extended periods in the basement, her unease grows. She becomes convinced that there’s something amiss beneath the house and decides to uncover the enigma. The film will have a restricted theater premiere.
2. George A. Romero’s Resident Evil – January 7, 2025 (VOD)
Instead of a traditional feature film, this work is a documentary that delves into the story of George A. Romero’s unrealized “Resident Evil” movie project. Although the popular video game series was eventually brought to life on screen, Romero played no part in its creation. This documentary explores the development of his abandoned script and blends documentary narrative with Romero’s signature style.
3. Birdeater – January 10, 2025
The film takes place in the Australian wilderness, where a bride-to-be attends her fiancé’s bachelor party. As they immerse themselves in the enigmatic landscape of the Outback, what was intended as a festive gathering transforms into a harrowing journey of self-realization. As the intricacies of their relationship come to light, the celebration quickly devolves into an actual nightmare for all involved.
4. Survive – January 10, 2025 (VOD)
This VOD feature can be thought of as a “Jaws” in reverse, if you understand my meaning. Essentially, the story revolves around a family who find themselves in a massive storm that brinks their boat to the edge of destruction. Once they regain their bearings, they notice an extraordinary event – Earth’s polarity has switched, leading to the oceans draining away. With this change, dangerous creatures from the depths are now exposed and on the hunt for food.
5. Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare – January 13, 2025
In a surprising turn of events, the long-forgotten world of Neverland, often referred to as the “Poohniverse” (a name we’d almost forgotten), is making its return to the silver screen with a chilling twist. This upcoming horror film, adding a new chapter to the franchise, will focus on Peter Pan’s bloody quest for vengeance. The movie, titled “Peter Pan’s Revenge,” will premiere in theaters on January 13. However, if you wish to watch it on the big screen, you have until January 15 as it will only be available in cinemas during this period.
6. DinoGator – January 16, 2025 (VOD)
Essentially, this tale revolves around a genetically engineered creature resembling both a dinosaur and an alligator, which was brought to life by a scientist. This monstrous beast, previously wreaking havoc in the wilderness, is now intent on devouring people. The scientist, along with a band of individuals, must return to the treacherous swamps to put an end to this menace and protect their entire community from its brutal attacks, as the responsibility lies squarely on his shoulders for creating it not so long ago.
7. Wolf Man – January 17, 2025
Besides being a documentary, this film could appeal to a broader audience given its star-studded cast featuring Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott. The plot follows their family as they visit a countryside estate in Oregon with their daughter. However, upon arrival, they encounter an unusual beast linked to the enigmatic disappearance of Abbot’s character’s father.
8. Both Eyes Open – January 17, 2025
In this movie, the protagonist, Ally, flees from a harmful relationship, yet finds herself still in turmoil. She experiences hallucinations of her abuser and is later beset by enigmatic communications that only serve to intensify her fear and bewilderment. However, as she delves deeper into the puzzle of these messages, she gradually unearths a horrifying revelation.
9. Screamboat – January 24, 2025
Surprisingly enough, what you’re about to read isn’t part of the Poohniverse series, but it shares a similar level of absurdity. As the title indicates, it’s actually a horror reimagining of the iconic animated film “Steamboat Willie,” where Mickey Mouse first appeared on screen. In this new take, Mickey is depicted as a murderous and mischievous mouse who enjoys causing trouble. He’s small, mean, and loves getting into all sorts of mischief – making for an intriguing twist, wouldn’t you agree?
10. Presence – January 24, 2025
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I must share some exciting news about a movie that’s been creating quite a stir – “Kimi” directed by the illustrious Steven Soderbergh. Initially premiered at Sundance earlier this year, it’s set to hit theaters on January 24 next year (although, given its date changes, I wouldn’t hold my breath until the actual release). Regardless, with a blend of psychological thriller and horror elements, this film promises to be an intriguing watch. Stay tuned!
11. Companion – January 31, 2025
Initially planned for release on January 10, 2025, the movie has been rescheduled to the end of the same month. We’ve previously discussed this film, and it promises to be an intriguing psychological horror that many enthusiasts will find appealing. Given its potential, it could potentially be one of the more notable titles in our list.
