As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and cinephile, I must admit that this list takes me on a rollercoaster ride of nostalgia and excitement. From the dark and gritty beginnings to the brighter, more colorful chapters, the evolution of the DC Extended Universe has been quite the journey.
Initially, the DCEU set out to imitate the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s triumph, with Warner Bros. intending to develop a cinematic universe lasting for a full decade featuring well-known DC Comics characters.
Despite achieving financial success, Zack Snyder’s darker approach in the DCEU films didn’t seem to strike a chord with viewers, eventually leading to its replacement by James Gunn’s revamped DCU. Nevertheless, the DCEU produced several superhero movies that left an impact on audiences. As a result, fans have been drawn to Ranker to share their top 10 preferred DCEU films. Let’s explore these chosen titles together.
10. ‘Blue Beetle’ (2023)
Under the DCEU label, “Blue Beetle” was one of the last movies to be released, featuring the eponymous superhero. Despite not pulling large cinema crowds, it was a well-made film with emotional family motifs and an excellent character depiction. Excitingly, Blue Beetle’s story will carry on in an upcoming animated series that will form part of the DCU!
9. ‘Black Adam’ (2022)
It’s uncertain if “Black Adam” would crack my top 10 favorites, but it hinted that the DCEU might be nearing its final chance to regain popularity. Furthermore, it initiated Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s efforts to reshape the DCEU leadership. Despite its thrilling action scenes and star-studded lineup, the movie underperformed and became a significant box office disappointment.
8. ‘The Flash’ (2023)
I personally enjoyed “The Flash,” so I’d rank it a bit higher on the list. However, many viewers were unhappy about Ezra Miller reprising the role amid legal troubles, leading them to boycott the film. Additionally, those who weren’t bothered by Miller’s portrayal still chose not to watch the movie, as it was already known that the DCU would be replacing the DCEU. Still, the film did bring back Michael Keaton as Batman, which is definitely a highlight.
7. ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016)
Despite initially being met with a mix of humor and skepticism, people ultimately grew to admire its complex, somber undertones. It’s also the movie where we first encountered Wonder Woman. Considering its influence, there’s no question that it belongs on this list.
6. ‘Shazam!’ (2019)
“Shazam! stood out as a triumph for the DC Extended Universe because it was the initial solo film for a lesser-known character that managed to thrive. The movie’s unique blend of humor and lightness set it apart from the more somber superhero films in the series, and Zachary Levi’s portrayal of the main character was particularly noteworthy!”
5. ‘Man of Steel’ (2013)
“In “Man of Steel,” Henry Cavill first appeared as Superman, however, the movie drew criticism for depicting Superman violating his no-kill rule. Despite this initial response, Cavill is now generally considered one of the top screen adaptations of the character. This makes it a little confusing to find this placement on the list.”
4. ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021)
Absolutely, we’re talking about Gunn’s interpretation here. Unlike the initial release, which encountered criticism for its shallow characters, “The Suicide Squad” offered more nuance and background details for its diverse group of characters. Each character was assigned a unique role and persona, making them more impactful and intriguing. With increased creative liberty and a larger financial backing, Gunn managed to fully actualize his concept, resulting in a movie that was not only visually stunning but also dared to venture where the original couldn’t, in terms of narrative boldness.
3. ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ (2021)
Initially, the “Justice League” team experienced many difficulties during production, such as personal losses and set complications, causing Ben Affleck to decide against future superhero movies. However, Zack Snyder’s four-hour version of “Justice League” offers a more extensive and nuanced narrative, giving characters a richer backstory and boasting enhanced action sequences. Ultimately, this extended cut is considered a better film than the one directed by Joss Whedon.
2. ‘Wonder Woman’ (2017)
1. “Wonder Woman” from the DCEU is notable for its remarkable box-office performance and Gal Gadot’s outstanding depiction of the character. The movie provided a powerful blend of emotion and action, exploring her early years on Themyscira and her journey to heroism. To this day, it stands among the top superhero origin stories in cinema, and we wholeheartedly endorse its high standing!
1. ‘Aquaman’ (2018)
It’s surprising how incredibly popular this Aquaman movie became, considering its past as more of a target for jokes than admiration. The film earned acclaim for its stunning visual effects and underwater scenes. Director James Wan managed to combine action, adventure, fantasy, and humor in an unusual but effective way. Above all, audiences were eager to watch Jason Momoa bring the character to life. I wholeheartedly concur with this evaluation!
