Hellboy: The Crooked Man Director Says Film Is ‘Completely Different’ And True To Original Comic Book

As a seasoned lifestyle expert with a penchant for comic book adaptations and a soft spot for Hellboy, I must say that the upcoming film “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” has piqued my interest significantly. Having spent countless hours poring over various graphic novels, I can appreciate the director’s decision to stay true to the source material, especially when it comes to the intricate world of Mike Mignola’s Dark Horse Comics.

Director Brian Taylor opted to steer clear of mirroring the earlier live-action Hellboy films in “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” choosing instead to align with the original Mike Mignola comic book’s theme. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Taylor shared with Collider why he chose to adapt The Crooked Man comic book accurately rather than referencing other movies.

He explained that it’s a film set in the past (period piece), featuring a younger version of Hellboy, and it doesn’t connect with the other movies in the series.

Taylor described the character from the Dark Horse Comics series as similar to a roaming nocturnal hunter, who coincidentally arrives in a town besieged by ominous forces. In this troubled locale, he acts as a handy helper, resolving their difficulties much like a plumber would fix pipes.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but express my fervor for the portrayal of Hellboy in this movie. Just like the director, I eagerly anticipate that the viewers will share my enthusiasm for this interpretation of the short-fused yet contemplative character. Personally, I yearn for the approval of the original comic book creator, Mignola, on my rendition of his masterpiece.

His strategy was to focus on one person – Mike Mignola – as the primary audience. If Mike Mignola believes that this is his version of Hellboy, then they have achieved their goal, he concluded.

In the style of its titled TV series, Hellboy: The Crooked Man unfolds during the 1950s and narrates the adventures of Hellboy alongside a novice agent from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. After finding themselves in rural Appalachia, they stumble upon a secluded village tormented by witches, with one of Hellboy’s former adversaries, a local fiend known as The Crooked Man, leading it.

Mike Mignola, who collaborated on the script of the upcoming movie, had previously lauded the Hellboy film released in May 2023. In a social media update, he shared, “Though I wasn’t physically present during production, they’ve been gracious enough to share daily footage with me, and let me tell you, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed what I’ve been watching.”

In his post, he hinted that long-waiting fans of his work would finally see an authentic adaptation of his source material. He further stated, “If you’ve been eagerly anticipating a Hellboy movie based on one of my stories, I believe your wait is about to end.”

Hellboy: The Crooked Man’s official release date hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s anticipated to hit the screens towards the end of this year.
