‘Heat 2’ Adds Major Star to Join Leonardo DiCaprio in Explosive Sequel

Christian Bale will be reprising his role in Heat 2, the sequel to the popular 1995 film Heat. Reporter Jake Hamilton confirmed the news after speaking with Bale, who told him he’ll soon be filming in Chicago for the movie.

As a huge fan of the original, I’ve been waiting a long time for a sequel – decades, actually! It’s been 31 years since we first saw Robert De Niro as the cool, calculated thief Neil McCauley and Al Pacino as the dogged detective, Vincent Hanna. The first film was a masterpiece, following McCauley’s attempt at one last score while Hanna pursued him with everything he had. It’s really become one of the most highly regarded crime movies ever made, and I’m excited to see what they do with a follow-up.

Michael Mann, the director of the original film, recently wrote a novel called Heat 2, published in 2022. This book tells the backstory of detective Vincent Hanna, showing his early career, and also explores what happened to Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis both before and after the events of the 1995 movie. It essentially expands the Heat universe, acting as both a prequel and a sequel.

The next installment in the film series is said to have a star-studded cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Austin Butler, Adam Driver, Ana de Armas, and Al Pacino. While not confirmed, DiCaprio is expected to play the role originally made famous by Val Kilmer. It’s still unknown which character Christian Bale will portray.

Christian Bale and Johnny Depp previously co-starred in the 2009 film Public Enemies. If filming starts soon in Chicago, as Bale suggested, it will be their first time working together in over 17 years.

The original Heat movie was a big hit, making over $187 million around the world despite costing only $60 million to produce. It’s highly rated, with an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and has become a beloved classic for many. Audiences continue to appreciate the powerful acting by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, and the film’s realistic and elaborate crime scenes.

While there’s no confirmed release date for Heat 2, current estimates point to a potential launch in 2027.
