Heartbreaking Yellowjackets Death Shocks Fans in Season 3

In the third season of Yellowjackets, death seems to be a recurring theme. Characters from both timelines are being eliminated, with Coach Ben meeting his end in the past and Lottie’s fate remaining a mystery in the present. It appeared as though Melissa might be the next casualty at the end of the last episode, but unexpectedly, it is Van who meets her demise in the eighth episode of this season, setting up a finale that promises to be emotionally challenging.

The story begins as Van remains unconscious following a health emergency. In this state, she interacts with her younger self who hints at an impending death and brings up the adventure of “The Goonies.” The teenage Van advises adult Van to seek out the treasure. Eventually, Van regains consciousness in the hospital, where Tai stands by her side. Together, they depart along with Misty, bound for Virginia on a quest to locate Shauna.

En route, they encounter Melissa unexpectedly, leading them to believe she had perished. However, it turned out she was alive. Life lesson: Always ensure your vehicle has enough fuel for emergencies. The group captures her and confine her in their vehicle. Melissa reveals that Shauna attacked her viciously, causing her to lose a part of her arm and become violent.

Upon returning to Melissa’s house, they find Shauna tidying up with blood smeared across her face. This triggers an argument between them about who murdered Lottie, causing Misty to exit, leaving the trio to deal with their own chaos. Melissa is bound and seated near the fireplace by Tai. Van departs outside, while Tai and Shauna remain indoors, keeping watch over Melissa. In response, Melissa tugs at a fireplace flue control, causing an unexpected shock that knocks out both Tai and Shauna.

In this scenario, Van steps in with the intention of rescuing them, encountering Melissa brandishing a knife as if to take her life in exchange for extending her own. However, Melissa appears to express compassion towards Van and offers herself up instead. Yet, Van is unable to carry out the act, questioning why he cannot emulate such selflessness. Instead of comforting him, Melissa unexpectedly seizes his hand and plunges the knife into Van’s heart. With that one swift move, Van is gone, forever altering the dynamics of Yellowjackets.

On the airplane, older Van finds herself in a situation similar to adult Natalie, where she sees her younger self lying wounded on the floor. Upon entering, Tai and Shauna discover teen Van on the ground with the back door open and Melissa missing. This scene plays out before Van’s eyes as she ponders why her young counterpart would lead her into such a dangerous situation. Teen Van explains that it’s just the way their story unfolds, and the payoff was reuniting with the person they love – presumably referring to bringing Tai back from being replaced by Other Tai.

Indeed, everything about this situation is utterly confusing and tragic. Van truly deserved a far happier fate. Her cancer arc feels almost superfluous in light of these events. I can’t help but wish she could have continued running her charming little bookstore, free from the clutches of all these dangerous individuals. It seems Melissa may have killed Van out of suspicion that Shauna or Tai might do the deed, but at the cost of sacrificing her simple, uneventful life. This tragic turn of events will only make her pursuers more determined to find and eliminate her.

Inexplicably, it seems that Tai and Misty might take action and eliminate Shauna and Melissa, given their unstable state of mind. The chaos and turmoil appear to originate from Shauna’s mental instability. As for the aftermath of Van’s demise, we can only wait and see how it unfolds in the season finale of Yellowjackets.
