As a dedicated fan of Gilmore Girls who has followed the series since its inception, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of nostalgia and admiration for the late Edward Herrmann and his unforgettable portrayal of Richard Gilmore. Kelly Bishop’s recent interview with E Online brought back memories of their strong bond on set, which was not just limited to their roles as husband and wife but extended beyond that as New York actors who shared a camaraderie that only comes from similar backgrounds.
Recently, Kelly Bishop shared heartfelt reminiscences about her time working alongside her late television partner, Edward Herrmann, in the cherished comedy-drama series Gilmore Girls. Herrmann portrayed the role of Bishop’s character’s husband, Richard Gilmore, for all seven seasons. (Paraphrased)
Nevertheless, it’s important to note that Ed Hermann, who played Richard Gilmore in the original series, was not part of the revival titled “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” (2020) because he had sadly passed away in 2014 at the age of 71 following a battle with brain cancer.
In a chat with E Online, Kelly Bishop shared her feelings about shooting the Gilmore Girls revival without her longtime co-star Edward Herrmann. She admitted it was tough, expressing, “It was challenging,” and went on to say, “He was our leading man. I truly believe he would have been there if he could.” Bishop explained that she had a deep connection with Herrmann since they started working together, noting that as fellow New York actors, they cultivated a strong sense of “esprit de corps” or camaraderie.
She mentioned that when they found out they both liked solving the New York Times crossword puzzles, it helped deepen their bond. Specifically, she would get a copy of the “Times” and work on it with him in the makeup and hair trailer, then if they didn’t finish it, they’d take it to the set and continue working on it between takes.
Bishop pointed out that they had a strong connection because of their shared histories, and he found Herrmann delightful to collaborate with, expressing that Herrmann was simply exceptional.
In her conversation with the press, the actress who played in The Salzburg Story also shared memories of returning to her beloved role as Emily Gilmore during the revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. She spoke about how her character had a larger narrative arc in comparison to others following the sad demise of her co-star.
The actress pointed out that unlike the other characters who developed and transformed, her real-life experiences underwent a significant shift, offering her numerous exciting activities she truly relished participating in.
Moreover, Bishop expressed her hope for a potential return of the series, stating, “Why not pick up where we left off, showing us as our mature selves? It’s possible. However, I must admit, I find it rather improbable.
Kelly Bishop recently published her book titled The Third Gilmore Girl, in which she disclosed that she wasn’t aware Edward Herrmann was fighting brain cancer until a few weeks prior to his passing, as reported by EW. She reminisced about calling Lauren Graham and the series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who shared her shock just as deeply. Bishop further mentioned, “We found it difficult to find words beyond ‘Oh my God’ and ‘Please don’t let this be true.’
Gilmore Girls and its revival series are available to stream on Netflix.
