In essence, the final episode of “The Last of Us” season two heavily drew from its original source, even incorporating the intensely aggravating ending. However, it excelled in delivering its most poignant and emotional scene by reinterpreting a moment from “The Last of Us Part II”. HBO’s adaptation subtly but significantly altered Ellie’s confrontation with Mel and Owen, transforming an already heart-wrenching encounter into a truly heartbreaking tragedy.
In the style of HBO’s series, during The Last of Us Part II, Ellie encounters Owen and Mel in an abandoned Seattle aquarium, bickering. Similar to the show, her strategy to get them to disclose Abby’s location results in a fatal turn of events. The original scene unfolds with Owen reaching for Ellie’s weapon. In response, Mel lunges at Ellie with a knife after Ellie shoots him. However, Ellie proves too powerful and subdues Mel, fatally stabbing her on the spot. Later, she confronts a gravely injured Owen to learn Abby’s whereabouts. On his deathbed, Owen whispers something indistinctly, which if listened carefully to, reveals that Mel was carrying their child.
The situation is beyond repair. There’s no way for Ellie to prevent the loss of the baby, leaving her heartbroken and overwhelmed with guilt. In the throes of despair over her actions, Ellie suffers a severe panic attack, losing consciousness until Tommy and Jesse arrive. Upon their arrival, they gently help Ellie, deeply saddened by the turn of events, back to the theater, where Abby quickly launches an assault on them.
As a passionate gamer and movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on a powerful, poignant sequence I recently encountered. In this video game scenario, we witness an alarming escalation of violence that inevitably leads to Jesse’s demise. Interestingly enough, HBO elevated the emotional impact of this already heart-wrenching scene by reimagining it through Mel’s perspective, turning her into a central figure in her own heartbreaking end. To add another layer of complexity, they subtly introduced a flicker of hope that serves as a poignant reminder of what could have been.
In the game and the show, every Firefly who assisted Abby in seeking revenge against Joel faced repercussions for their actions. However, among those who aided Abby, Mel from the series was particularly sympathetic. She grappled with Joel’s death and even hesitated to sedate Dina gently. Ariela Bare’s portrayal of Mel had a tender and empathetic quality that many others in this perpetual violence often lacked. (Joel’s screams still haunted Nora, but she remained glad he perished.) Mel’s humanity—a rarity among those surviving in this zombie-infested world—was vividly demonstrated as she tried to save her own child during her final moments.
In the television series, rather than attacking Ellie, Owen was fatally shot by Ellie in the neck. However, had this version of Mel not been fatally wounded, she probably wouldn’t have attacked Ellie. The bullet unfortunately passed through Owen and struck Mel, severing her carotid artery. As a trained medic, Mel instantly recognized the gravity of the situation and chose to focus on saving her unborn child during her last moments. She instructed Ellie (just as in the game) on how to deliver the baby, unbeknownst to Ellie that Mel was pregnant.
Throughout it all, Mel managed to stay composed, which only served to heighten the sorrow in her words. Yet, as she continued to instruct Ellie, her voice grew quieter and more gentle. The fleeting, aggravating glimmer of hope that her commands sparked seemed to dim just as quickly. As Ellie found herself unable to act, each ticking second made the situation more unbearable, as Mel’s life ebbed away. To add insult to injury, a dying Mel was oblivious to the circumstances, believing that Ellie had successfully saved her baby. This misconception offered some measure of peace for Mel, but it was nothing short of dreadful for both Ellie and those watching.
In this outstanding instance, HBO’s “The Last of Us” truly shone at its peak. Such transformations are what set remarkable adaptations apart. By enhancing significant scenes and moments, they elevate the original content. Instead of focusing on Mel and her baby’s death around Owen and Ellie, the creators made a profound choice that intensified the scene significantly. This decision not only added emotional depth to the immediate event but also enriched the broader narrative arc of the series.
As Dina’s revelation unfolds, as Jesse’s fate looms near, and with the knowledge that season three holds for gaming enthusiasts, this moment in Ellie’s life feels monumental to me, a cinema devotee. Throughout her journey, Ellie has been a relentless slayer of monsters and human adversaries. Yet, here she took the life of an innocent creature, which made the encounter with Mel – a soul touched by tragedy, having lost both her own life and that of her baby due to a thirst for vengeance consuming her – even more profoundly heart-wrenching. The consequences of Ellie’s actions were felt deeply as they resonated with the impact of Mel’s fate on her own soul.
In this situation, Ellie’s intense dislike culminated in this outcome, much like Abby’s hatred resulted in the loss of her companions. The heinous act of taking an expectant mother’s life is a tragic consequence often associated with committing heinous deeds. Witnessing a dying mother’s desperate attempts to save her child, as she herself was nearing death, was as horrific as it gets.
