HBO’s LANTERNS Premiere Bumped to Summer 2026

Premiere dates are changing for shows on Disney+ and now, it’s happening with the new DC Universe (DCU) as well. One project fans were particularly looking forward to was Lanterns, a superhero detective show similar to True Detective, starring John Stewart and Hal Jordan investigating a dangerous cosmic mystery across the US. After a promising 2025 for the DCU, Lanterns was originally slated to debut in early 2026. However, according to TheWrap, the premiere has been pushed back to late summer 2026.

I just got back from HBO’s presentation in New York, and Casey Bloys dropped some interesting news about the DCU schedule. It looks like we can expect the next installment, previously planned to lead into the Supergirl movie next June, to arrive around August instead. This means things are getting a little crowded – Lanterns will now be part of a really busy few months for the DCU, alongside the already-scheduled horror film Clayface, which is still set to release on September 11th.

Honestly, there hasn’t been much revealed about the Lanterns series beyond a photo of stars Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, which James Gunn from DC Studios shared when production began in spring 2025. We know a few of the actors involved, including Ulrich Thomson as Sinestro and Nathan Fillion returning as the foul-mouthed Guy Gardner. But we haven’t even seen a short clip or trailer yet. It’s unclear why the release date has shifted – it could be specific to the show itself, or part of a larger plan for HBO.

We haven’t had any new DC Universe projects for more than six months now. Meanwhile, Marvel is kicking off the year with Wonder Man in January and the second season of Daredevil: Born Again in March, followed by the big movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day in May. This means Marvel is dominating the spring season, while DC is aiming for the summer.
