As a critic, I’m already seeing a lot of talk comparing HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series to the films, and frankly, the newest images of the Hogwarts Express aren’t doing much to quiet those comparisons. It feels like everyone is immediately looking for differences, and these photos are fuel for that fire. It’s a tough spot for the show to be in so early on, as expectations are incredibly high.
The idea for the show is to cover one book each season, allowing the creators to add more details than were possible in the films. However, some fans are concerned that the series will constantly be compared to-and overshadowed by-the well-known movies.
The official Wizarding World account on X (formerly Twitter) recently posted photos and a brief video showcasing the Hogwarts Express as featured in the show.
I, like a lot of others, immediately noticed how strikingly similar the train is to the one featured in the films. It was so realistic that some viewers playfully suggested it might be footage from the movies’ original production – a behind-the-scenes glimpse, almost! I can see why they’d think that; it really looked the part. It’s amazing how accurate it is.

“Is it the same as in the movies? Or just very similar?” One commenter asked.
Chris Columbus, the director of the initial two Harry Potter movies, has shared his thoughts on the TV series as well. He expressed his disapproval of HBO reusing the same costume for Hagrid that he originally designed for the films.
“I wondered what the purpose of it all was,” Columbus explained, noting he’d envisioned the show unfolding differently. He probably feels the same way about the Hogwarts Express, too.
While the TV show could really delve into the source material, initial pictures seem to indicate it may largely retell the story fans are already familiar with from the films. It has the potential to go deeper, but early looks suggest it might not. We’ll see.
