HBO Teases Epic Battles and Expanding Targaryen Universe in House of the Dragon Season 3!

The second season finale of “House of the Dragon” left viewers on the edge of a significant battle from the Dance of the Dragons – not quite the resolution fans were hoping for. They anticipated witnessing that grand conflict, but HBO assures us it will be worth the wait. Francesca Orsi, Head of Drama Series and Films at HBO, told Deadline that the Battle of the Gullet will exceed expectations due to its delayed filming. Moreover, if this isn’t enough to excite Targaryen bannermen, Orsi also hinted that HBO is contemplating renewing “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” for two more seasons. Additionally, HBO continues to develop additional potential high-budget spinoffs centered around the dragonriders of the Seven Kingdoms.

The epic battle depicted in George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” titled ‘The Battle of the Gullet,’ will arrive eventually. In the meantime, HBO urges impatient fans to have faith that the delay will result in a superior product. As Orsi shared with Deadline during the premiere of “The White Lotus” season three, she’s been on set for season three and has witnessed the incredible elements being developed. She expressed her gratitude for the wait, believing that the quality of the series this season will surpass anything they could have achieved at an earlier time.

HBO reduced the second season of the show from its initial plan of ten episodes to eight. The Battle of the Gullet unfortunately didn’t make the cut. Whether Orsi is entirely truthful when she claims they needed extra time to construct the battle set because it’s “incredibly vast,” she’s certainly creating excitement for the show that will now have to live up to expectations. However, if any TV series can handle a spectacle of this size, it’s House of the Dragon. The show’s problems during its second season were not related to its action scenes.

Absolutely, the Battle of the Gullet is still a while away as production for season three has just started and it won’t air until at least spring 2026. However, we won’t have to wait too much longer for the next “Game of Thrones” spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“, which is set to premiere later this year. It’s possible that seasons two and three might follow soon after as well.

Orsi mentioned that, similar to George R.R. Martin, HBO is quite content with the lower budget series. Not only are they considering extending it for two additional seasons (since Martin has penned three Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas), but they’re discussing filming these seasons consecutively. This is beneficial because one of its main actors is quite young, which helps alleviate the issue of real-life aging that fictional characters don’t have to worry about.

Although Orsi characterized the creation of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” as personal, she mentioned that other potential series in Westeros would resemble both the scale and cost of “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon”. Orsi hinted at another spinoff in development, which she declined to discuss, but indicated it has great potential. Furthermore, she revealed that this show will focus on House Targaryen, with Aegon’s Conquest being a possible reference. Additionally, she mentioned that there are several other spinoffs in the works, though they can’t guarantee all will be produced, and these others will have substantial budgets.

Regardless of which projects get aired, there’s only one thing we ask: Try to avoid making major battles at the end of seasons a common occurrence. While the Battle of the Gullet may be impressive if it lives up to expectations, we’d rather not see that pattern repeated.
