As a seasoned gamer and avid reader with a heart for fantasy epics, I must admit, the glimpse into HBO’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has me more than just a tad excited! After years of eagerly waiting, it feels like the universe of Westeros is finally expanding in ways that truly excite me.
As “House of the Dragon” bid farewell to its second season, it welcomed one of Westeros’ most cherished pairs into the fold. HBO unveiled a preview for shows set to premiere in 2024 and 2025, and within this montage was the first glimpse from their upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“. This quick sneak peek at Dunk and Egg‘s live-action debut showcased some significant moments and characters from their initial adventure together.
In the first season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the storyline will be based on George R.R. Martin’s first Dunk and Egg novella titled “The Hedge Knight,” published in 1998. The series starts with Peter Claffey’s character, Ser Duncan the Tall, riding into Ashford Meadow for a grand tournament. There, a humble Dunk puts on his helmet, indicating that his armor does not match that of a wealthy knight.
Next, there appears a supporting character known as Steward Plummer, who oversees the games during the tournament. In this scene, he inquires about Dunk’s identity from him. However, what is not shown is the potential height difference concern that Steward Plummer might have with the towering knight.
As a seasoned reader of fantasy literature, I must say that the portrayal of Aegon Targaryen, another namesake of the legendary duo, has piqued my interest in this tale. In the scene where he is depicted sitting by a fire with a bird cooking on a spit, it’s evident that his shaven head conceals not just a peculiar physical trait but also a significant part of his identity, which ultimately leads him to become Ser Duncan’s squire. This subtle yet intriguing twist in the narrative reminds me of the complexities and unpredictability that are often found in the lives of characters within this genre, making it all the more captivating for fans like myself who appreciate such nuances.
At a distance, we notice an elderly gentleman honing his sword skills. That’s none other than Ser Arlan of Pennytree, the knight who once took on young Duncan as a squire when he was just a lad. The demise of Ser Arlan prompts Duncan to attend the Ashford Meadow tournament by himself.
Near a significant tree, Duncan unsheathes his sword, announcing himself through a voiceover. It appears as though he’s practicing without his armor, and the angle of his blade suggests this isn’t just a drill. A grievance seems to have ignited his anger.
In the end, we witness Ser Duncan the Tall, from Flea Bottom, clash fists with a man encased in armor. Their fierce battle takes place amidst a sea of mud and scattered bodies. To reveal who Dunk is battling might spoil a significant aspect of the story. If you prefer to keep the surprise until the show airs in 2025 (or read Martin’s tale), it would be best to look away from this point. However, if curiosity gets the better of you, feel free to read on past this image.
It’s highly probable that the unseen fighter is Aerion Brightflame, Egg’s older brother. You might wonder why a noble knight like him would engage in a muddy battle with a royal prince, but we won’t reveal all the details yet, even after six seconds of footage from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
