HBO Race-Swaps Ser Bennis in ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2

HBO is expanding the cast for the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and one new actor is already generating buzz among fans of George R.R. Martin’s books.

Lucy Boynton, Babou Ceesay, and Peter Mullan are the latest actors to join the world of Game of Thrones. Boynton will play the role of Lady Rohanne, Ceesay will be Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, and Mullan will play Ser Eustace Osgrey.

Choosing Femi Ceesay to play Ser Bennis means the character has been reimagined with a different ethnicity than how he was originally portrayed in George R.R. Martin’s books and comics.

Ser Bennis Race-Swapped From George R.R. Martin’s Story

Ser Bennis is a character in “The Sworn Sword,” a story by George R.R. Martin featuring Dunk and Egg. This story, along with others, forms the basis for the collection A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The character is portrayed as a grimy and off-putting hedge knight known as “Bennis the Brown.” This nickname comes from how rarely he bathes, not from his complexion.

Bennis the Brown wasn’t known for being clean. He was quite small, standing around five and a half feet tall and weighing significantly less than Duncan the Tall – about eighty pounds less, in fact. He had bad teeth, stained red and brown from a diet of sourleaf, and his eyes were small, green, and close together.

He’s called “brown” because he’s often covered in dirt, has skin darkened by the sun, and always wears a simple brown tunic.

The graphic novel adaptation of The Sworn Sword also depicts Ser Bennis as a white character.

New Cast Members Join Season 2

The new season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his young companion, Egg. The story takes place about 90 years before the world of Game of Thrones.

Lucy Boynton will play Lady Rohanne, an important figure in the history of House Osgrey and the Red Widow of Coldmoat.

Babou Ceesay, an actor you might recognize from Alien: Earth and Damilola, Our Loved Boy, plays Ser Bennis – a knight who gets caught up in the struggles between powerful families.

Peter Mullan, the actor from shows like Ozark and I Swear, will portray Ser Eustace Osgrey, a knight desperately trying to maintain what little dignity remains for his family.

About A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin’s stories about Ser Duncan the Tall and Prince Aegon Targaryen. These adventures take place well before the time of Game of Thrones.

The story is set during the time of the Targaryen family, when dragons were still known and conflicts were brewing throughout Westeros.

The first season of the show will be based on the novella The Hedge Knight. If the show continues, future seasons are planned to cover the stories The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight.
