HBO Orders New Damon Lindelof Show THE CHAIN To Series

HBO and Damon Lindelof have a proven track record of creating exceptional TV shows. They previously collaborated on critically acclaimed series like The Leftovers and Watchmen, both considered among HBO’s best. Now, they’re teaming up again for a new series based on Adrian McKinty’s novel, The Chain, which HBO has ordered directly to series.

Damon Lindelof, known for his work on Lost, is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for The Chain, a new eight-episode limited series. This project is the first under his recent two-year deal, signed in September, and represents his return to the showrunner role since leading HBO’s Watchmen in 2019. The Chain was originally a book published in the same year.

The network revealed details about the upcoming adaptation (as first reported by Variety), stating that Damon Lindelof is building upon the story from Adrian McKinty’s acclaimed thriller. The description of the bestselling book, a New York Times favorite, gives viewers a preview of what to expect. According to Mulholland Books:

A mother faces an impossible choice: to commit a crime and rescue her kidnapped daughter from a dangerous group, or lose her forever.

I was absolutely blown away when I first learned about the concept for Adrian’s book. Honestly, I was a little mad at myself for not coming up with it first! As a huge thriller fan, I’ve always wanted to adapt a really gripping story, and this one has everything – it’s dark, strange, and incredibly exciting, exactly the kind of thing that gets my creative juices flowing. I’m thrilled to be working with Francesca, Casey, and Michael again – they gave me my start at HBO fifteen years ago, and I’m hoping we can make The Chain something truly special to add to their already incredible track record.

Carly Wray, Lindelof, and Breannah Gibson are developing the pilot episode, with Lindelof and Wray writing the screenplay. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer from Media Res, along with Shane Salerno, are executive producers. Author McKinty will also be a co-executive producer on the show.

If history is any indication when HBO and Damon Lindelof work together, the show will be great.
