As a big fan of James Gunn’s work, I was really excited for Creature Commandos. But honestly, the fact that the whole series is now available to watch for free on YouTube pretty much tells you how it did on HBO – it wasn’t the hit they were hoping for, unfortunately. It’s a shame, but at least everyone can check it out now!
This animated show was James Gunn’s first project for the new DC Universe, but it didn’t attract much of an audience, according to Nielsen ratings.
DC is building excitement for a special event! They’re streaming every episode of ‘Creature Commandos’ on their YouTube channel December 22nd and 23rd to celebrate the first anniversary of DC Universe Infinite. Get ready for a non-stop, action-packed marathon!
Of course, giving it away for free suggests they’re trying to salvage interest any way they can.

Another Gunn Project With Declining Viewership
This isn’t the first time this has happened with James Gunn’s shows. His series Peacemaker also experienced a significant drop in viewers as it aired, and it was ultimately canceled.
Like previous DC projects, Creature Commandos was heavily promoted with a lot of initial excitement from James Gunn, but interest quickly faded when viewership numbers were disappointing.
For a project meant to “launch” the DCU, it didn’t move the needle.

Trying to Spark Interest for Season 2
Now that people are anticipating Season 2, releasing Season 1 on YouTube seems like a way to get viewers excited again.
Releasing it to a wider audience could make a difference, since its run on HBO Max didn’t gain much traction. There’s even a chance the next season might be released on YouTube for free.
This YouTube release, if anything, highlights the significant challenges facing the DCU. As Warner Bros. Discovery prepares for a sale, James Gunn continues to work hard to keep the DCU relevant.

Creature Commandos reaction
Our reviews of Creature Commandos are mixed, largely due to storytelling choices that have proven controversial under James Gunn’s direction.
The show begins strongly with good animation, a compelling idea, and likeable characters, but it soon falls into a pattern that feels very familiar and quickly becomes predictable.
The show’s middle episodes are noticeably slow, relying too much on lecturing and unnatural character interactions instead of a strong plot or real tension. This makes the show feel stale long before it ends.
Although a few episodes—like the fifth and sixth—show promise, and the finale offers some action and resolution, these moments aren’t enough to fix the show’s uneven writing and constantly shifting tone.
Similar to other early DC Universe projects, Creature Commandos hints at its potential, but James Gunn’s sometimes controversial creative choices consistently hold it back from reaching its full promise.
