HBO is nearing an announcement of the release date for the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. The show, based on J.K. Rowling’s popular books, has been in development for a long time, and HBO is now getting closer to deciding when it will first air.
In an interview with Deadline on January 30, 2026, Casey Bloys, head of content for HBO and HBO Max, stated they are still aiming for a 2027 release. He clarified that they’re now targeting the beginning of 2027, but wouldn’t commit to a specific month, reiterating the early 2027 timeframe.
He said earlier this year that the show might be released in late 2026 or 2027, but the writing hadn’t really begun yet.
Filming for the show is taking place at Leavesden Studios in the UK. The new generation of characters will be played by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Paapa Essiedu will portray the adult Severus Snape, alongside John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall. Nick Frost is joining the cast as Rubeus Hagrid, and Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick.
Francesca Gardiner, a writer and executive producer known for her work on Succession, is creating the series. Mark Mylod, the director of The Menu, will direct multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, David Heyman, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts are also executive producers, and Hans Zimmer has joined the team to compose the music. Zimmer stated, “The music of Harry Potter has inspired composers worldwide, and we’re honored to be a part of this incredible project.”
The show’s young actors were chosen from over 32,000 applicants throughout the UK and Ireland. McLaughlin recently started performing on stage in a production of Macbeth, while Stanton has a lot of experience in London’s West End. Stout is making his first professional appearance on screen. The first season will consist of eight episodes, and HBO is already suggesting there will be a second season.
The show is creating a buzz thanks to its fresh approach to the story and the participation of Hans Zimmer. People are particularly eager to hear how Zimmer will reimagine the iconic music from the Wizarding World for television.
