As a lifelong film enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of cinema from the golden age of Disney to the modern era of psychological thrillers, I must say that Hayley Mills’ return to the silver screen in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap is nothing short of inspiring. At 78 years young, her determination and resilience are truly commendable.
Hayley Mills has shared insights about her role in the recently debuted psychological thriller Trap. In this movie, Mills portrays Dr. Josephine Grant, an FBI profiler who comes out of retirement to pursue a notorious serial killer named Cooper, played by Josh Hartnett. Cooper is seen attending a pop concert with his daughter Riley, portrayed by the actress, under the stage name Lady Raven. Unbeknownst to them, they find themselves in a trap orchestrated by the police instead.
Recently, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the unexpected chance to work alongside M. Night Shyamalan in his latest film. Honestly, I hadn’t anticipated acting again, let alone questioning if another movie was even on the horizon for me – frankly, I wasn’t shedding any tears. It seems that many people perceive me as a Disney actress, but this time around, I’m proving them wrong and embracing this exciting new opportunity!
As I stepped away from the silver screen during my 50s, I found that captivating leading roles were scarce. Instead, I immersed myself in the world of theater and television productions. Yet, when my agent presented me with an opportunity to join Shyamalan’s movie project, I was more than ready to make a comeback. It was a role that I would never have anticipated being offered to me.

Mills also mentioned that her character’s age plays an important role in the movie’s narrative, contributing to the main plotline.
Hayley Mills commended the film director for his exceptional work and expressed her delight at returning to a film set, highlighting that there was ample room, allowing for deeper breaths, and on a project like Night’s, there was no need to hurry. The actress emphasized that he is a multi-faceted filmmaker, as he wrote, directed, and financed the movie himself.
The actress added that portraying a serial killer character isn’t a walk in the park, as it requires considerable effort. However, she praised her co-star Josh Hartnett for his outstanding performance, stating that he seamlessly manages to strike a balance between darkness and light because of his natural charisma and good humor.
