During a recent interview on the Josh Smith Podcast, Heartstopper actress candidly shared an encounter with Tom Cruise where he advised her to confront fear directly rather than retreating from it. On March 25, she discussed her battles with social anxiety in detail.
During the interview, Atwell explained social anxiety as an intense sensation that can surface in unfamiliar settings, workplaces, or among groups of people. She described it as follows: “When I enter a room and I sense the anxieties rising, making me wish to withdraw into my own thoughts, and causing me to overanalyze…
She shared that anxiety tends to make her retreat, brood excessively, and focus intensely on self-critical thoughts. During such moments, as she confided, Cruise suggested an alternative approach.
Instead of letting fear reside within her, Cruise encouraged Atwell to search for its source externally. He suggested she survey the surroundings, identify anything that might cause her unease, and inquire whether a specific person or situation was causing her discomfort.
In simpler terms, Atwell quoted Cruise as suggesting, “Instead of focusing on what makes you uncomfortable, take a step back and examine your surroundings. Ask yourself questions like, ‘Which person in this room triggers my past insecurities? Is it the one who reminds me of my school bully, or the one who didn’t offer me a job, or the one I believe was unkind to me?’ He also questioned, ‘Where does this feeling reside outside of me, and where might I be subconsciously attributing it to?’
Through direct confrontation, he suggested that one can understand, label, and ultimately conquer their fear. Atwell found that this method aided her in pinpointing the origin of her fears and discovering realistic strategies to defeat them, all thanks to Cruise’s guidance.
According to Atwell, Cruise simply advised, “Face your fears head-on. Don’t shut your eyes or look away. Instead, continue to gaze at them. This strategy can provide insights on how to conquer them.
She shared how confronting her fears directly allowed them to gradually weaken – instead of appearing as a menacing figure lurking in the darkness, they became challenges that could be overcome.
She mentioned, “If I stare at something that scares me for a while, it usually stops appearing as a scary monster lurking under the bed.
With this approach, Hayley Atwell explained, she’s been able to confront feelings such as loneliness, envy, or intimidation head-on.
