A Pessimist’s Perspective
Julian Dumoulin-Smith of Jefferies, a gentleman whose pronouncements clearly carry weight – or, at least, a considerable number of decimal places – has revised his opinion of the stock. He now suggests selling, a recommendation delivered with the sort of decisive finality one usually reserves for bad poetry. One suspects he finds the stock lacking in… imagination.
He has also, with a flourish, reduced his price target by a dollar, settling upon $12.50 per share. A precise sum, though one wonders if precision is ever truly possible when dealing with the whims of the market. It is a game of shadows, after all, and the light is perpetually shifting.
The analyst’s revised outlook, it appears, stems from a rather pedestrian concern: uncertainty. The stock, he believes, has reached a parity with its peers, but carries with it a heavier burden of unanswered questions. Legislative decisions regarding funding and pricing, it seems, are casting a pall over the investment. One might say the stock is suffering from a surfeit of practicality.
The Price of Illumination
I wouldn’t advise a frantic dash for the exits, naturally. Panic is so…common. However, I confess I find myself less than enthralled by the prospect of acquiring more shares at this juncture. The uncertainty surrounding pricing is, shall we say, a trifle disconcerting. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a utility in possession of a fortune must be in want of a stable revenue stream.
But then, affordability is becoming a universal concern. Hawaiian Electric is hardly alone in facing scrutiny. The rising cost of everything, it seems, casts a long shadow, and even the most brilliantly lit islands cannot entirely escape the gloom. One might almost say it’s a most fashionable predicament.
