Hasbro’s THE GAME OF LIFE is Getting its Own Movie

Okay, so after the Barbie movie blew up, it’s official: Mattel is really trying to build a whole cinematic universe, with sixteen movies planned! And now Hasbro wants a piece of the action. Honestly, it feels like we’re about to see a serious rivalry emerge – I’m calling it the MCU versus the HCU (Hasbro Cinematic Universe – I might need to trademark that!). The news just dropped on March 18th that they’re partnering with Amazon MGM Studios and Chernin Entertainment to make a Game of Life movie. Seriously, Game of Life! This is going to be… something.

Amazon MGM is currently working on a movie adaptation of the board game The Game of Life. Hasbro, the company behind the game, has a history of turning its toys into films, having already made movies based on Transformers, G.I. Joe, My Little Pony, and even Battleship back in 2012. While those films featured robots and talking ponies, The Game of Life presents a unique challenge – it’s a story about the everyday journey through life, and that will be an interesting approach for a movie.

I’m really excited about this new film! Sean Anders is taking the director’s chair, and he’s also producing it alongside John Morris. Peter Chernin and David Ready from Chernin Entertainment are involved as producers too, as is Zev Foreman from Hasbro Entertainment. The screenplay is by Allan Loeb, which is a great sign – I’ve enjoyed his work before!

Right now, the story is still a mystery. Because the game simulates life – from young adulthood through retirement – there are many possibilities. Players can choose careers, get married, start families, and experience unexpected events as they progress. It’s interesting to think about how this could be adapted into a movie. Hasbro could stick closely to the game, like they have before, or they might try something different, perhaps similar to the feel of Jumanji. Another cool idea would be a *Wreck-it-Ralphstyle movie where the game pieces come to life on the board.

Hasbro is expanding its movie and TV universe beyond The Game of Life. They’re currently developing new projects based on popular games like Clue (with Sony), Dungeons & Dragons (with Netflix), Monopoly (with Lionsgate), and Magic: The Gathering (with Legendary Entertainment). With these projects underway, Hasbro is becoming a major player in cinematic universes, potentially challenging Mattel’s existing franchise.
