Hasbro Promises They Aren’t Using AI For MAGIC, D&D

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a part of everyday life, and like any technology, it has both benefits and drawbacks. We’re already seeing AI used to create realistic videos of celebrities, assist with movie production, and even create virtual actors. Companies like Hasbro have experimented with AI in product design, but CEO Chris Cocks has assured fans that they will not use AI to create content for their popular games, Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

Both Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons have incredibly detailed and expansive fantasy worlds. Each new product release features unique artwork and designs meant to capture the feeling of these worlds. In an interview with The Verge’s Decoder podcast, Hasbro’s Cocks explained that some of their brands, specifically Wizards of the Coast, will not be incorporating artificial intelligence into their creative processes.

“Garbage in, garbage out.”

He explained that some brands simply aren’t popular with players or creators. Because of this, they aren’t considered for inclusion in their video games, Magic: The Gathering, or Dungeons & Dragons.

Cocks described using AI for creative work as simply producing poor results if the initial input is poor. He emphasized that truly good ideas still come from people, who are also the ones who actually bring those ideas to life.

Many people feel the same way about AI’s role in gaming. You often see the term “AI slop” used online to describe low-quality AI-generated content. Players are relieved to hear that their favorite role-playing games won’t be negatively impacted by AI. While AI is becoming more common in creative fields, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro have thankfully avoided using it in their games.

Some Magic: The Gathering players haven’t been happy with the artwork in recent sets like those based on Avatar: The Last Airbender and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, Wizards of the Coast has firmly denied that artificial intelligence was used in creating the designs, and they have no plans to start using it in the future.
