In a declaration made to The Post, his representative expressed that while they won’t delve into the intricacies of Mr. Weinstein’s medical situation, they are outraged by the persistent medical neglect demonstrated by NYC Health and Hospitals and Bellevue. It’s important to clarify that this is not a matter of blame against Rikers, CHS [the city jail system’s Correction Health Services], or the doctors at Bellevue, whom Mr. Weinstein holds in high regard.
The statement further explained that it was a significant error not to hold Mr. Weinstein at Bellevue during his trial, as this could potentially prevent him from attending his own retrial due to his medical condition, which is chronic myeloid leukemia. Given his health issues and the fact that he’s in custody, Mr. Weinstein has retained legal representation to file a lawsuit against NYC Health and Hospitals, as well as Bellevue, asserting his right to appropriate care while incarcerated. However, the exact outcome of his health is uncertain for many sources.
Craig Rothfeld, serving as Weinstein’s healthcare attorney, expressed displeasure over the public conjecture regarding Weinstein’s personal health matters. Rothfeld emphasized to the media outlet that privacy is crucial in this situation and did not provide additional details about Weinstein’s health status.
According to Weinstein’s representative, there are suggestions made that this alleged medical neglect might be part of a bigger plan to offer subpar healthcare deliberately, which could potentially prevent Weinstein from participating in his own retrial.
Currently facing trial on two counts of sexual misconduct charges, both of which have been dismissed by New York’s supreme court, Weinstein was convicted for these offenses in 2020. Specifically, he was found guilty of rape and a criminal sex act, and sentenced to 23 years imprisonment.
