As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the arts and a fondness for Harry Potter, I find it profoundly poignant that two of the series’ most iconic actors, Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Michael Gambon, have departed from us just a year apart. Their untimely passing serves as a stark reminder of the transient nature of life and the immortal impact they left on our collective cultural consciousness.
Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Michael Gambon passed away at the age of 89 and 82 respectively, on the same date, exactly one year apart. Both actors had been actively contributing to the art of theatre and cinema for over seven and six decades respectively. However, it is through their early 2000s roles as the two pillars of Hogwarts, younger fans have come across their magnificence. And Harry Potter fans can’t help but draw a tragic connection between the two beloved actors’ demise.
In the Harry Potter movie franchise, Smith played the sharp and intelligent Professor McGonagall, while Gambon assumed the role of Dumbledore starting from 2004, following the death of Richard Harris in 2002. Tragically, both actors passed away on separate September 27th dates, one year apart.
In 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the duo known as the Professors began working together at Hogwarts. Interestingly, they had collaborated before in a 1965 production of Othello; Smith portrayed Desdemona, while Gambom made his first appearance as Senator/Soldier/Cypriot.
In the Harry Potter series, Smith garnered fresh admirers with her captivating portrayal of the powerful transfiguration teacher, eventually becoming the headmistress. Following this, Gambon took over the role in the six films following “Chamber of Secrets,” as reported by SBS News. In a jovial manner, Gambon once quipped that portraying Dumbledore was similar to playing himself, merely with an added beard and long robe.
According to the family’s statement to People, the actor from The King’s Speech, Michael Gambon, passed away on September 27th, 2023 after experiencing complications from pneumonia. The statement explained that he passed away peacefully in a hospital surrounded by his wife Anne and son Fergus. He was 82 years old. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time and appreciate the messages of support and love you have sent.
While talking to Evening Standard, Dame Maggie Smith shared that during the filming of the Harry Potter series with her late co-star Alan Rickman, they didn’t feel like they were really “acting” because the roles didn’t fully utilize their creative prowess and exceptional talents. Nevertheless, she remains deeply thankful for the opportunity to portray what is widely recognized as one of the most formidable characters in Harry Potter.
Smith’s children, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, confirmed her passing with a statement expressing that she was surrounded by friends and family at the time of her death. They shared their profound sorrow as they lost an intensely private woman who was adored by five grandchildren and two sons. The double Oscar-winning actress peacefully passed away on September 27th, 2024.
