Even popular movies like ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ have small mistakes that viewers sometimes notice. These can include props changing or costumes appearing different from one shot to the next. While these little errors don’t spoil the movie, they’re hard to unsee once you’ve spotted them! Here are some of the most popular mistakes fans enjoy pointing out.
The Birthday Cake That Rewrites Itself
The birthday cake Hagrid gives Harry isn’t perfect – the pink icing message is intentionally a little messy and misspelled. If you look closely, the letters actually change shape and move around between shots. Crumbs and icing smears seem to jump around the edge of the cake, and by the time Harry puts it down, the cake looks noticeably different than it did at first.
Letters With Shifting Addresses
Hogwarts letters flood the Dursleys’ living room, all appearing to be written in elegant green ink. However, as the letters fly around, some strangely change – their addresses disappear, or the handwriting becomes different. Even the wax seals aren’t always in the same spot. Harry picks up a letter that visibly alters – its position and the lines on the envelope shift with each camera angle.
Floating Candles On Obvious Strings
One of the most iconic scenes in the movie features floating candles in the Great Hall. If you look closely at some wide shots, you can see thin wires used to suspend them. When the camera angle changes, the same candle seems to subtly shift position, even though the flame doesn’t move. Also, the length of the wax appears to magically reset between different shots.
Hermione’s Hair Continuity Swings
Throughout the first few scenes, Hermione’s hair seems to change dramatically. Sometimes it’s tightly curled, and in the next shot, it’s looser and wavier. Strands of hair even appear and disappear between moments, making it look as if different shots were edited together.
The Vanishing and Returning Props At Ollivanders
Inside Ollivanders wand shop, things aren’t quite as they seem. Wand boxes on the shelves appear to fall and then neatly restack themselves during Harry’s wand selection. A pile of boxes on the counter subtly changes height and position as the camera moves. Close-up shots reveal that even dust marks on the boxes seem to jump around, and the scattered lids on the floor aren’t consistently placed.
Glass At The Zoo That Plays Tricks
Inside the reptile house, you can clearly see condensation building up on the glass of the snake enclosures. When the camera focuses on Harry, the patterns of moisture on the glass change and become thicker or thinner. After the joke where something vanishes, the puddles on the floor appear to grow and shrink between each camera angle. Even the wetness on Dudley’s clothes seems to change during all the excitement.
Ties and Scarves That Swap Styles
In the early scenes at Hogwarts, the students’ house ties and scarves are supposed to stay consistent, but there are noticeable errors. For example, a tie might be tied higher up in one shot and then lower in the next. Similarly, a scarf worn over a shoulder will sometimes switch to the other side between cuts in the film. Even small details like the spacing of stripes and the way fabric is folded don’t always match up when the camera angle changes.
Quidditch Gloves That Change Mid-Play
During Harry’s first Quidditch match, there are noticeable inconsistencies with his gloves while he’s trying to catch the Snitch. If you look closely, the length and stitching of the gloves seem to change between shots. Then, they revert back to how they originally appeared. Additionally, the marks on his broom handle that show where he’s gripping it appear to shift position from one frame to the next.
Chessboard Pieces That Reset
During the Wizard’s Chess game, once the chess pieces are moved, their positions – both broken and unbroken – shouldn’t change. However, after seeing the characters’ reactions, the arrangement of pieces on the board mysteriously alters. Pieces that were down on one square are now on different ones, and the spacing between the remaining black pieces also shifts between each move.
Hospital Wing Items That Rearrange
Throughout the final hospital scenes, small details around Harry’s bed quietly change. Things like dishes, sweets, and flowers subtly move positions. For example, a dish will switch sides when the camera angle changes, and the number of beans in a box will fluctuate during conversations. Even the blankets at the foot of the bed shift and rearrange themselves as the characters talk.
