As a die-hard fan, I simply can’t help but be in awe of the extraordinary journey of Madelaine Petsch! From her humble beginnings in Port Orchard, Washington, to becoming a household name as Cheryl Blossom on Riverdale, she has truly come a long way.
Star Madelaine Petsch has etched her name in the TV sphere with her breakout role as Cheryl Blossom for seven seasons of The CW’s hit, Riverdale. Having started acting at the age of five, Petsch has gained recognition for her works in the horror and mystery genres, starring in movies like Jane and Polaroid. The talented actress celebrates her 30th birthday on Sunday, 18 August 2024. As she steps into a new milestone, we take a look back on her life and career.
Early life
Born on August 18, 1994, in Port Orchard, Washington, USA, Madelaine Grobbelaar Petsch was brought up by her South African parents, Michele and Timothy S Petsch. For the first ten years of her life, she regularly traveled between South Africa and Washington due to her family’s movements, as stated in a Status Magazine article from May 2017. She has an older brother named Shaun Petsch.
At just three years old, she started dance lessons. Her initial exposure to acting came when she was five and began attending theater classes. After completing her education at the Tacoma School of the Arts in Washington, she relocated to Los Angeles with the aim of furthering her acting career.
2017 saw Lili Petsch sharing insights about her childhood experiences as an outcast in a small town in Washington. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, she disclosed that she and her brother faced bullying due to their red hair and South African accents. Moreover, they were often mocked for their vegan lifestyle and beliefs regarding religion.
“In my case, growing up like Madelaine wasn’t your typical small-town experience. I was the odd one out and often faced teasing, as my brother did with stoned threats. Yet, even in those challenging times, her extraordinary childhood still shines brightly.”
Elsewhere, Petsch advocates for the vegan community and participates in PETA awareness campaigns.
Hollywood career
Madelaine Petsch first appeared on television following her signing for a nationwide Coca-Cola ad campaign in 2014. After that, she secured the part of Cheryl Blossom in February 2016 and played the redhead character soon after it premiered, as reported by Deadline. It is said that Petsch was cast for this role in late 2015 by a casting director connected to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, according to Glamour.
2017 saw Riverdale make its debut, quickly becoming a favorite among young viewers and launching Madelaine Petsch’s career as Cheryl for the subsequent seven seasons, culminating in the series finale in 2023.
At the same time, she first appeared on the Hollywood scene with the 2019 horror movie titled Polaroid. Not long after the debut of Riverdale, she was added to the cast, taking on the role of Sarah.
Madelaine Petsch is not only an actress known for her roles on screen, but she’s also a social media influencer and manages her own YouTube channel to share the genuine side of herself beyond her television personas. However, in 2019, there was a setback when she was initially cast and set to executive produce Mitzi Peirone’s horror-comedy, Saint Clare. Unfortunately, Bella Thorne took over the role in 2022 as reported by Deadline.
Over time, this actress has been given significant roles primarily focusing on horror and mystery genres. Some examples are Sightless (2020), Jane (2022), The Curse of Sleeping Beauty (2016), and The Hive (2014), as well as others. In addition, her romantic comedy projects include About Fate (2022) and Hotel for the Holidays.
Madelaine Petsch has joined the cast of Renny Harlin’s The Strangers trilogy, which began with its first movie hitting theaters on May 17, 2024. This horror-mystery is the third installment in the original The Strangers film series, following The Strangers from 2008 and The Strangers: Prey At Night in 2018. In The Strangers: Chapter 2, due for release towards the end of 2024, Madelaine Petsch will take on a significant role in the storyline.
Personal Life
It’s said that Petsch was romantically involved with rapper Travis Mills (formerly known as T. Mills) for about three years before they parted ways in 2020. Their relationship began when the rapper reached out to her via a direct message in 2017. The couple were quite open about their romance, but Petsch expressed regret over their public display of affection following their separation, according to Cosmopolitan.
Following this, Lili Reinhart, known for her role in Riverdale, began dating Anthony Li, Halsey’s music manager, towards the end of 2022. She made their relationship public with a subtle Instagram post in November and announced that they had been together for a year as reported by J-14 in August 2023.
Prior to this, there were reports suggesting a romantic involvement between her and the British fencer, Miles Chamley-Watson. These speculations emerged following their sighting together in Vancouver, Canada, during March 2021.
In a candid interview with Flaunt Magazine, the actress revealed her struggles with mental health following her separation from T. Mills. She shared that her mental state had reached its lowest point during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic while navigating through the breakup.
