Happy Birthday Jason Momoa: Revisiting His Top 10 Movies As Actor Turns 45

As a die-hard movie enthusiast with a soft spot for action and adventure, I must say that Jason Momoa has truly made a name for himself in Hollywood! From his humble beginnings as a model to his breakout role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, Momoa has proven time and again that he’s got the chops to play some seriously badass characters.

45 years old now, Hollywood actor Jason Momoa reminisces on his illustrious acting career. Making his debut in Baywatch: Hawaii from 1999 to 2001, Momoa hails from Hawaii. However, it was his role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones that catapulted him to international stardom, where he played the husband of Daenerys Targaryen, the leading character.

To celebrate Jason Momoa’s birthday on August 1st, here are ten movies he’s appeared in, ranked by popularity:

1. Justice League

Under Zack Snyder’s direction, Jason Momoa made his superhero debut as Aquaman in 2017’s Justice League. In the DCEU movie, he portrayed Arthur Curry, a character who was brought up in the untamed ocean before being adopted by a lighthouse keeper. The lighthouse keeper then gave him the name Arthur Curry, replacing his original name of Orin.

The movie showcased an impressive ensemble including Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Jason Momoa. He took on the role of Aquaman after a short appearance in the film Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

2. Slumberland

In the 2022 Netflix fantasy film titled “Slumberland,” Jason Momoa played the character Flip, a more playful role compared to his usual superhero gigs. This heartwarming tale revolves around him helping a young girl named Nemo in her quest to find her father. The movie was directed by Francis Lawrence.

Although Momoa’s character Flip isn’t too distant from his roots, he ventures into the Sea of Nightmares with Nemo to retrieve a magical pearl for their task. Slumberland, starring Momoa, was one of Netflix’s most-watched movies in its debut week, amassing 1 billion minutes of streaming time, according to MovieWeb.

3. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

2018’s Aquaman left a lasting impression that the 2023 sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, struggles to recreate. In this new storyline, Black Manta embarks on a quest for vengeance against Aquaman, believing him responsible for his father’s demise.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: In my opinion, when it comes to the underwater realm, Black Manta harnesses the strength of the Black Trident, while Aquaman gathers a group, even including his incarcerated sibling, to safeguard their watery kingdom of Atlantis. The movie hit the screens just a year following the high-profile Johnny Depp and Amber Heard court case. Regrettably, her involvement might have tainted the production’s reputation, coupled with a less-than-stellar narrative.

4. Bullet To The Head

2012’s movie “Bullet to the Head” featured Sylvester Stallone alongside Jason Momoa, who played the character Keegan, an assassin. Keegan is employed by a crooked businessman who sets in motion a chain of murders that eventually catches the attention of Jimmy Bobo, portrayed by Stallone.

Additionally, Bobo – a former assassin – joins forces with detective Taylor Kwon (portrayed by Sung Kang) to bring down Keegan, who is under the control of a wicked boss. The movie culminates in an electrifying confrontation between Keegan and Bobo, a battle that has become a cherished action sequence in Hollywood.

5. The Bad Batch

Jason Momoa played a role in the post-apocalyptic thriller “The Bad Batch” before becoming Duncan Idaho in Dune. The story centers around a woman named Arlen who is banished to a barren Texas landscape, where she struggles to break free from the rule of cannibals and a cult leader.

In the story, Miami Man portrayed by Jason Momoa is linked with cannibals, but he joins forces with Arlen and sets off on a journey to locate his missing daughter. The film The Bad Batch boasts an impressive cast including Keanu Reeves, Suki Waterhouse, Jim Carrey, and once again, Jason Momoa.

6. Fast X

In a new addition to another popular movie series, the Hawaiian star, Jason Momoa, joined the Fast & Furious family in Fast X. He portrayed the antagonist Dante Reyes, who clashed with franchise stalwart Vin Diesel’s character, Dom Toretto, over revenge for Dante’s late drug lord father.

In the upcoming sequel, Reyes’ storyline plays a crucial role, as his aim is to eliminate every member of Dom’s close-knit automotive family. However, things take an interesting turn when Dom’s auto-loving kin jump into action and hatch plans to thwart Reyes’ sinister plan.

7. Braven

2018’s action-packed thriller, “Braven,” features Jason Momoa as Joe Braven, a devoted family man. He relocates to a remote mountain cabin with his father, aiming to rebuild their relationship. However, their peaceful retreat is disrupted when a band of drug dealers start harassing Braven and his kin.

8. Aquaman

In 2018’s Aquaman, Jason Momoa established a distinctive DC legacy, delivering a hit movie that has since been recognized as his finest work to date. In this initial release, Aquaman confronts the issues stemming from his brother’s lust for power.

In the comic books, Aquaman ventured deep beneath the oceans to retrieve Atlan’s Trident and assume the role of ocean protector, a move that earned him widespread praise from fans. The 2018 film, Aquaman, turned out to be the highest-grossing film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), but its sequel failed to maintain that level of success.

9. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

In the Lego adaptation of his DC character, Momoa once more portrayed Aquaman, this time animated, for the 2019 release The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Chris Pratt returns to his original role as Emmet Brickowski, an ordinary man, to confront a fresh danger in his world.

However, unlike before, he finds himself unable to handle things on his own this time around. So, he calls upon the mighty allies from The LEGO Movie 2 – Superman, Aquaman, Batman, and Green Lantern – to join forces and protect their Lego city together. The second installment of the movie series was a massive success, keeping the charm and essence of its precursor alive.

10. Dune

In the stellar ensemble of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, and Dave Bautista for the highly-anticipated sci-fi series “Dune,” directed by filmmaker Dennis Villeneuve, there’s also Jason Momoa.

According to the book series titled “Dune,” penned by Frank Herbert, this story focuses on the main character, Paul Atreides. He’s about to undertake a journey across the cosmos with the aim of shielding his family and dear ones while navigating a harsh, dystopian environment.

Consequently, Atreides becomes trained by the warrior Duncan Idaho, akin to Jason Momoa’s swordmaster, in preparation for battle, ensuring his victory.
