Hannah John-Kamen Talks About Ghost’s Character Development in the MCU: “you’ll see a different Ghost”

As a dedicated Marvel fan who’s been following Ghost’s rollercoaster ride since her quantum-infused debut, I can hardly contain my excitement for Hannah John-Kamen‘s return as Ava Starr in the highly anticipated *Thunderbolts*! The teasers and first-look photos have only fueled my anticipation, with the actress promising a refreshingly different Ghost.

Ava Starr, also known as Ghost, acquired the powers of becoming insubstantial and generating potent energy following a quantum mishap that tragically claimed her parents’ lives. At a young age, S.H.I.E.L.D. enlisted her as an undercover agent. However, in time, she discovered that she was succumbing to a fate caused by the unintended usage of the very quantum energy that powered her abilities.

As a gamer, diving headfirst into the virtual world, I stumbled upon a game feature – Hank Pym’s Quantum Tunnel. Intrigued, I sought to harness the power of the Quantum Realm for my own purposes, aiming to restore my health. Yet, unbeknownst to me, this energy was crucial for the survival of Janet van Dyne, as per Hank Pym’s rescue mission.

Ava tried to steal the lab, which led to a fight with Ant-Man and Wasp. Afterward, Janet gave her some of her quantum energy, which helped ease Ava’s condition. She then went into hiding with Bill Foster. Ava’s character is now on a path to “redemption” in the MCU, and she will soon play a key role in the new team of anti-heroes, Thunderbolts.

Indeed, Hannah John-Kamen will reprise her role as Ghost in the upcoming film, Thunderbolts. Previews and initial images suggest she’ll don a fresh outfit for the part. In a chat with Manilla Times, Kamen hinted at substantial character growth. During a recent interview, she unveiled that Ghost’s powers have become more stable, promising an entirely new portrayal of her character.

The last time I encountered her, she was in a highly agitated state. She was spasming uncontrollably and clearly suffering greatly. To put it another way, she seemed extremely sensitive or raw at the time. She was engaged in a struggle then, but now she appears to have regained control over it. This newfound control brings about a sense of tranquility, determination, and strength that wasn’t there before. Therefore, if you meet her again, you will notice a changed Ghost – one who is more calm, decisive, and powerful than before.

In this particular discussion, it’s not just Kamen who talks about her abilities. Interestingly, David Harbour has also hinted at a special connection between their powers and their character development in an intriguing manner.

It seems to me that the essence of this film revolves around an idea: our extraordinary abilities, be they superpowers or those of superheroes, have a profound connection with our own flaws and weaknesses. Moreover, these powers flourish not in solitude but in relationships with others, as being alone might transform them into a burden instead.
