Halloween Actor Charles Cyphers Who Played Sheriff Brackett, Dies At 85

As a dedicated follower of Charles Cyphers’ illustrious career, I am deeply saddened by his passing. A man who brought life to every role he played, Sheriff Leigh Brackett will forever be etched in my memory as a symbol of resilience and determination.

As a die-hard fan, I’m heartbroken to share that Charles Cyphers, known for his unforgettable portrayal of Sheriff Leigh Brackett in the iconic Halloween movies, took his final bow on Sunday in Tucson, Arizona. His manager Chris Roe confirmed this sad news after a brief struggle with illness at the tender age of 85.

Roe expressed that he’d deeply feel his absence, not just due to his charming personality and tender spirit, but also because he was an extraordinary storyteller who never ran out of fascinating tales.

In an interview with Variety, Roe expressed, “[Cyphers] was exceptional at storytelling, offering a captivating performance while he spoke. He was not just a friend but also a valued client for many years, and his absence will be deeply felt.” Roe acknowledged the challenge of dealing with the harsh reality of losing such a cherished companion and long-term client like Cyphers.

Born July 28th1939 in Niagara Falls, NY, Cyphers attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He then earned a BA degree from California State University, Los Angeles, in theater arts.

As a connoisseur of all things lifestyle and pop culture, allow me to share some intriguing trivia: In the chilling 1978 horror masterpiece Halloween, I had the pleasure of witnessing Jamie Lee Curtis’s captivating screen debut as Laurie Strode. The role of Sheriff Brackett was brilliantly portrayed by none other than Nancy Kyes, or Cypher in this context. Notably, the legendary John Carpenter and Debra Hill collaborated on the script for this timeless horror classic.

In addition to Donald Pleasence, P. J. Soles, and Nancy Loomis, other actors were part of the ensemble. As for the film’s synopsis, it goes like this: After being imprisoned for murdering his sister on Halloween night in 1963, Michael Myers manages to break free from a mental hospital and returns to the quiet town of Haddonfield, Illinois with the intention of causing more carnage.

In the continuation of my acting journey, I had the privilege of revisiting my role in Halloween II (1981) and most recently, Halloween Kills (2021). My collaboration with John Carpenter started back in 1976 when we worked together on the action movie Assault on Precinct 13. In this film, I played Officer Starker under his guidance. After that, our partnership extended to other projects like The Fog (1980) and Escape From New York (1981), among others.

Over the course of his acting career, Cyphers made appearances in a wide variety of well-known TV series like Charlie’s Angels, Wonder Woman, Barnaby Jones, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Roots, The Betty White Show, Starsky and Hutch, among many others.
