In a recent conversation, Halle Berry delved into an emotionally charged moment in the movie Never Let Go. Her character, Momma, finds herself in a heartbreaking dilemma when a severe winter depletes their food supplies. Faced with the difficult choice of sacrificing their pet dog, Koda, to feed her sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV), Momma breaks the news. This decision infuriates Nolan, who valiantly rescues Koda by untying the rope that binds his mother to the cabin.
As stated by Entertainment Weekly, during a question and answer session at Austin’s Fantastic Fest after the movie’s showing, Berry mentioned that the dog scene was difficult to film, commenting, “For me and everyone else involved, the dog scene proved to be quite challenging.
During filming, the actress from Union revealed that director Alexandre Aja had a pet dog named Peanut, who he carried in his coat. The dog’s face would occasionally poke out. She underscored that, being animal enthusiasts, this particular scene was tough for everyone involved in the production.
According to the report, Berry mentioned that the scene was repeatedly postponed because they recognized its emotional impact and were apprehensive about dealing with it. Yet, when the time eventually came, she observed that her fellow actors, Daggs and Jenkins, experienced a minor acting impediment.
She conveyed, “It seems he preferred avoiding the matter with the dog. It was challenging, so I took an unexpected approach to jolt him, break his focus from his apprehension and fear associated with the dog situation.
The actress from Moonfall mentioned that a real demonstration of their acting skills was when everyone followed along after she stirred things up, even causing Percy Daggs to shed tears as he empathized with his canine companion. She further explained that it’s these rare instances in filmmaking where authentic moments unfold naturally, and that’s how they managed to film that specific scene. To summarize, the single take that made it into the movie was likely the genuine moment she referred to.
Meanwhile, Alexandre Aja’s Never Let Go is now in theaters.
