Hades 2 patch changes the ending after fan backlash

A month after its official release and exit from early access, Hades 2 has received a significant update. This patch addresses fan disappointment with the game’s original ending and introduces a major change to the true ending. Be aware that the following details contain spoilers.

Players were disappointed with the original ending of the game when version 1.0 was released. After beating Chronos for the last time, Melione sends Zagreus back in time to destroy him. However, instead of fighting, Zagreus talks to Chronos and creates a new timeline where the Titan of Time has a peaceful upbringing with his family – though only Zagreus and Chronos remember this altered past.

Fans were upset because they felt the story took away Melione’s control over her own fate, especially after her difficult journey and ultimate defeat of Chronos. Some also believed it didn’t fit with Zagreus’s character, considering everything he’d done for his family in the previous game.

The updated ending doesn’t drastically change the story, but it includes some key alterations that fans believe significantly improve the outcome. Be warned: spoilers ahead! However, players who have already finished the game can unlock the new ending by performing a specific action at Hecate’s cauldron, allowing them to experience it again.

The updated ending now allows Melione, Persephone, and Hades to remember both the original timeline and this new one. Together, they decide to spare Chronos. This gives Melione the agency she deserves – instead of being forced down a path she dislikes, she makes the final decision, even against Hecate’s objections, and gets to cherish the memories of the happy family life she fought so hard to rebuild.
