Hades 2: How to go to the surface and survive there

Supergiant Games really delivered on the promise of Hades 2 by offering two distinct storylines. You’ll not only journey to the Underworld to challenge Chronos, but you’ll also be able to defend Olympus from attacks launched by his forces.

You’ll initially encounter a barrier, but you can overcome it and begin a new adventure on the surface. Your ultimate goal is to defeat the monster at the top of Mount Olympus. We’ll guide you through breaking the barrier and surviving the challenges ahead.

How to break the ward to the surface – Hades 2

The barrier blocking access to the surface is long-lasting. By completing challenges in the Underworld and making progress, you’ll eventually be able to speak with Hecate, who will teach you a spell to remove the barrier. You’ll need these items to cast the spell:

  • 1 Cinder
  • 1 Shadow
  • 3 Moly

You’ll get Cinder by defeating Hecate in Erebus, and by now you should have a good amount of it. Moly, the yellow flower, can be found in any room in Erebus. It’s easy to see against the dark scenery, so keep an eye out for it during your runs if you need more.

Creating Shadow is a bit trickier – you make it using the cauldron. If you don’t know how, you’ll need to get the recipe from Chaos. To brew it, you’ll need 30 Ash, 30 Psyche, and 3 Fate Fabric. You can buy all of these materials from the Wretched Broker in the Crossroads using bones.

I finally finished the spell, and the magical barrier shattered! But uh oh, there’s a catch. Melione’s a princess from the underworld, and it turns out she can’t handle being up here with us. My health is already starting to drop fast! Luckily, it looks like there *is* a way to fix it, though.

How to survive on the surface – Hades 2

To keep going, you’ll need to learn a new spell. This spell becomes available after you die on the surface for the first time, and it’s a bit trickier than the others, needing:

  • 2 Lotus
  • 2 Moss
  • 2 Nightshade
  • 2 Thalamus

You can find Lotus flowers growing on the ground in Oceanus, the second area of the Underworld – they’re bright white, so keep an eye out! To get Nightshade, you can grow it from seeds in your garden. If you don’t have seeds yet, you’ll need the Silver Shovel to dig them up in Erebus.

Moss can be tricky to find because it only grows on the surface – a dangerous place! Luckily, it’s fairly common in the early areas, so you should be able to collect the two pieces you need with just a few runs. Thalamus is the hardest to get, though. You’ll need to find its seeds and grow them yourself, so we’ve created a guide detailing all the seed locations in Hades 2.

Once you finish the spell, you’re all set – you’ll be able to explore the surface world freely. The surface area is just as expansive as the underworld, offering a completely new experience with different enemies, bosses, allies, and challenges to overcome.
