Gwyneth Paltrow Calls Ski Crash Lawsuit ‘Ridiculous’ Two Years After Trial Win: ‘I Won’t Be Shaken Down’

Gwyneth Paltrow recently discussed her ski accident trial that occurred two years ago, describing it as “absurd” and indicative of issues within the legal system. During an appearance on The World’s First Podcast hosted by Erin and Sara Foster, she commented: “I can’t help but say, it seems absurd that someone could ski into you from behind, causing you to fall, and then file a lawsuit against you… This exemplifies everything that’s wrong with our legal system.

The court case focused on a skiing accident in Utah from 2016, where retired optometrist Terry Sanderson claimed that actress Gwyneth Paltrow collided with him. He subsequently sued her for $3.1 million. However, Paltrow denied the charges and counter-sued for a nominal amount of $1, along with legal costs.

In the podcast discussion, Gwyneth Paltrow explained her decision to proceed with the trial rather than settling: “The situation was ludicrous, so I felt compelled to challenge it. It was like saying, ‘I won’t be intimidated or extorted.’ I simply refused to give in.

During the trial, the commentators noted that many viewers were more interested in Gwyneth Paltrow’s courtroom attire than the case itself. They playfully added that the most entertaining aspect of watching the trial was imagining a constant internal eyeroll due to her presence there.

In March 2023, the court in Park City, Utah, decided in favor of Gwyneth Paltrow following a brief deliberation of around three hours. The jury concluded that Terry Sanderson was entirely responsible for the accident. Upon hearing the verdict, Paltrow leaned towards Sanderson and appeared to speak a few words before departing from the courtroom.

Later on, Sanderson disclosed to journalists that Paltrow had offered him well-wishes, which he considered a thoughtful act. At that moment, Paltrow made public a statement explaining that resolving an unfounded claim would have impaired her honesty. She expressed satisfaction with the result and thanked Judge Holmberg and the jury for their careful management of the trial.

2023 saw Paltrow express to The New York Times that the ordeal seemed more like an endurance test for her. She elaborated that the whole episode felt peculiar, and she wasn’t certain if she had completely comprehended its impact on her yet.
