As an ardent admirer of Gwendoline Christie, I must say her journey in the realm of entertainment is nothing short of mesmerizing! From Brienne of Tarth to Captain Phasma, and now Principal Weems in Wednesday, she has proven time and again that she can masterfully portray complex characters with a touch of brilliance.
Gwendoline Christie’s career has been nothing short of remarkable, and it wasn’t long before her exceptional acting skills, as demonstrated in Game of Thrones, caught everyone’s attention. Beyond her screen performances, she is also admired for her sincerity off-camera, such as when she shared that she felt beautiful onscreen for the first time.
In an open chat with Entertainment Weekly, Christie shared that director Tim Burton asked her to collaborate on defining her character’s persona for the Wednesday series. She remembered him giving her the freedom to explore her role however she pleased, emphasizing creative liberty, and mentioning ongoing discussions about it as they progressed in their work together.
She referred to it as an incredible opportunity from a legendary filmmaker. Christie expressed how she felt portraying Principal Weems, sharing, “It is the first time I’ve ever felt beautiful on screen.”
The actress further expressed her deep appreciation towards Tim Burton, Colleen Atwood (the costume designer), and their team for makeup and hair, stating it couldn’t be more sincere. Christie admired Atwood’s work, describing it as something similar to “magic in the realm of transformation.” The star felt privileged to collaborate with both the director and the acclaimed costume designer on the project.
In the first season of Wednesday, Principal Weems is depicted as a firm and guardian-like character who enforces rigorous regulations. Interestingly, she also has the unique power to transform herself into any person or thing.
During our chat about her character, The Sandman actress revealed that she drew inspiration from the concept of playing an “outsider,” a figure often overshadowed by Morticia Addams.
Christie elaborated on the recurring idea that the protagonist could be reminiscent of a Hitchcock heroine, a captivating figure, which might entice this young woman to envision the allure of cinema as a manifestation of her dreams and fantasies. Interestingly, Burton and Atwood independently shared this vision for the character’s development.
Anticipation for the series has spiked again due to the news about its highly anticipated second season. Fans will be delighted to know that they can stream the second episode on Netflix starting from 2025, specifically on a Wednesday.
