As an ardent admirer of Guy Pearce and his illustrious career, I find myself deeply moved by the tantalizing tale of the elusive L.A. Confidential sequel. The very thought that we almost got to witness another chapter in the lives of Detective Ed Exley and Jack Vincennes brings a pang of nostalgia and regret, much like the bittersweet taste of an unfinished meal.
Imagine, if you will, the grandeur of Curtis Hanson’s vision, brought to life by the combined talents of Pearce, Crowe, and the late, great Chadwick Boseman. The prospect of such a powerhouse ensemble gracing our screens once more is enough to make any cinephile weak at the knees.
Yet, fate seems to have other plans. The dream of L.A. Confidential 2 has been cruelly snatched away from us, much like a well-loved book being snatched out of our hands by an overzealous library guard. It’s a cruel twist of fate that the deaths of Hanson and Boseman have further complicated matters, leaving us to wonder what could have been.
However, in the spirit of finding humor in adversity, I can’t help but chuckle at the image of a Netflix executive dozing off during a pitch meeting for L.A. Confidential 2. If only the sequel was as captivating as the original, perhaps it would have kept everyone wide awake! Alas, for now, we must content ourselves with imagining what might have been and hope that one day, James Ellroy’s books will inspire another noir masterpiece worthy of our adoration.
Actor Guy Pearce, famed for his part in the movie “L.A. Confidential,” recently discussed the near possibility of a sequel. This film, initially released in 1997 and adapted from James Ellroy’s novel, significantly boosted the international careers of Australian actors Russell Crowe and Pearce within the crime drama genre.
The movie turned out to be a huge success, garnering nine nominations for the Academy Awards and taking home two, among them the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (Kim Basinger).
In an interview with Business Insider, Pearce shared that back in 2007, director Curtis Hanson mentioned to him a sequel idea he had been contemplating with Ellroy. Excited to reprise his role as Detective Ed Exley alongside Crowe, Pearce and the entire team appeared keen on the project. However, Hanson’s health deteriorated, and he sadly passed away in 2016.
While the idea of a sequel was not completely discarded, it took on a new shape. Plans were made to continue the story of “L.A. Confidential” with the title “L.A. Confidential 2“, set in 1974, which is 21 years after the original narrative. The late Chadwick Boseman was considered for the role of a young officer, James Muncie, alongside Pearce and Crowe.
At some stage, Curtis contacted me and shared that he was discussing with James Ellroy, the author of “L.A. Confidential”, about writing a sequel specifically. This conversation took place ten years later, and he wanted me to be part of it. I readily agreed without hesitation, and Russell Crowe was also on board. Curtis emphasized that it should be the same team, including Warner Bros., myself, Ellroy, and Russell. It seemed like a straightforward decision for me. The project advanced to some extent, but unfortunately, Curtis fell ill and passed away in 2016.

Regardless of its promising foundation, Warner Bros. chose not to progress with the project. Attempts to present it elsewhere reached a stalemate when, during a conference with Netflix, a high-ranking executive allegedly dozed off. This incident left screenwriter Brian Helgeland disheartened and unwilling to pursue other production companies.
Restarting the project after the deaths of Hanson and Boseman proved more challenging. Nevertheless, Pearce remained eager to resume his character. Given the talent of actors like him, Crowe, and Boseman, some believe that choosing not to make a sequel was a lost opportunity.
As a long-time fan of crime fiction and film noir, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment whenever I think about the possibility of a sequel to James Ellroy’s masterpiece, “L.A. Confidential.” Having grown up reading his gritty and atmospheric novels, I have always been captivated by the dark and complex world he created in his stories set in post-war Los Angeles.
The dream of a sequel may seem to have faded over the years, but I still hold out hope that one day we’ll see another noir film adaptation of Ellroy’s work, perhaps even a follow-up to “L.A. Confidential.” Brian De Palma’s “The Black Dahlia” and the long-rumored “White Jazz” movie have shown that there is still interest in bringing Ellroy’s tales to the big screen.
For now, I find myself lost in thought as I ponder what could have been for “L.A. Confidential 2.” As a fan, it’s hard not to imagine how the characters we came to know and love would continue to evolve and face new challenges in a sequel. But until that day comes, I will continue to immerse myself in Ellroy’s novels and rewatch “L.A. Confidential” with a sense of longing for what could have been.
