As a lifelong Superman enthusiast who’s seen every incarnation from Christopher Reeve to Henry Cavill, I must say that this new take on Clark Kent under James Gunn’s direction is nothing short of a breath of fresh air!
In our latest update, the brand-new trailer for “Superman” has surfaced, offering a novel perspective on the character of Clark Kent that earlier films have failed to portray effectively. Fans have long struggled with accepting the idea that Superman and Clark Kent are distinct individuals, given that the only discernible difference is Clark’s glasses and perhaps a subtly different stance.
There’s often a humorous irony in the fact that despite how evident it is, Earth’s inhabitants seldom seem to comprehend it. This aspect has always been rather absurd in Superman tales, given that other superheroes take great pains to conceal their true identities behind masks.
In contrast to traditional portrayals, the new Superman directed by James Gunn presents an unusual twist: Clark Kent in this version sports a distinctly different hairstyle compared to his alter ego. This shift is noteworthy as it’s a departure from previous versions that have struggled to convincingly execute this aspect.
Previously, transitioning from Clark Kent to Superman in movies often felt clumsy with an excessive amount of posing and minimal acting. While Christopher Reeve excelled at embodying both characters physically, his hairstyle wasn’t particularly helpful in maintaining the illusion. (As a fan, I can say that it was always noticeable when he switched between Clark and Superman.)
He had a side part that was about the only visual cue for the change, and his Superman had the same kiss curl that stayed mostly in place. It was always clear to us that the same guy was under both identities.
As a dedicated fan, I couldn’t help but notice in “Superman Returns” that Brandon Routh opted not to alter his hairstyle when transitioning from Clark Kent to Superman. This consistency in appearance added an interesting layer to his performance, as the transformation primarily rested on other acting decisions and the audience’s willingness to suspend disbelief.
In the film “Man of Steel”, Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman carried over the same issue: His Clark Kent appearance, while slightly slicked back, wasn’t significantly different from his Superman look, making the disguise feel less convincing.
This is where James Gunn’s version stands out.
David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent features a messy, curly hairstyle that contrasts significantly with his Superman appearance. This difference is evident, even during ordinary scenes such as when Clark embraces his father in Kansas. His hair tends to fall loose and unkempt, and it’s apparent that he doesn’t strive to resemble the clean-cut, heroic Superman we are familiar with when he’s off to work at the Daily Planet in Metropolis.
As Corenswet transforms into Superman, his hair receives a neat makeover, swept back in a more organized fashion. This modification alters his appearance, making his face appear more defined, thereby creating an impression of him moving from a humble reporter to the powerful Man of Steel. The kiss curl is still noticeable but understated, while the rest of his hair is styled in a manner that makes him seem unique and somewhat ethereal.
This significant change enhances the character’s authenticity as it addresses a common issue fans faced – struggling to accept that characters in previous films didn’t recognize Superman was just Clark Kent with glasses. By introducing a distinct hairstyle for Clark that Superman doesn’t possess, the film facilitates suspension of disbelief, making it seem plausible that nobody can discern the difference between the two.
Additionally, it infuses a modern flair into the persona, giving an impression that Superman is being reinvented thoughtfully, maintaining a balance between engaging the viewer’s intellect and adhering to the classic conventions of the superhero storyline.
