James Gunn discussed various topics related to the DC Universe during the Peacemaker Season 2 podcast and a fan Q&A on Threads. He talked about potential developments for The Flash and Wonder Woman, the role of Superman in the DCU, and the reason behind Krypto’s inability to simply greet people.
The Flash and Wonder Woman in the DCU
During a conversation about Peacemaker Season 2, when the topic of The Flash and Wonder Woman’s status as part of the DC universe came up, Gunn clarified their role in the canon.
To be honest, I’m unsure about the current existence of what we’re discussing. However, it’s certain that they will come into being at some point in time. So, let’s observe and find out when that happens.
After the significant flop at the box office of the 2023 movie, it’s uncertain what lies ahead for The Flash in future productions. With Ezra Miller having played the character most recently, there has been a surge of fans advocating for Grant Gustin from The CW to assume the role within the DCU instead.
Regarding Wonder Woman, it’s noteworthy that James Gunn’s recent comments occur at a time when rumors suggest a new Wonder Woman film is in development at an accelerated pace. Previously, Gunn has made clear that DCU films will progress only if the scripts are strong enough to his standards.

Why Superman Isn’t in the Justice Gang?
In the context of Threads, a user inquired as to why Superman hasn’t formally aligned with a team similar to the Justice League within Gunn’s DCU, given his close relationships with its members. To this, Gunn responded:
On Threads, someone wondered why Superman hasn’t yet joined a team like the Justice League within Gunn’s DCU, considering his friendships with its members. Gunn then addressed this question:
Perhaps there are several factors to consider, but let me start by questioning if Superman might feel uneasy being part of a team funded by one of the world’s largest corporations, given that this team also endorses the corporation.
When the fan suggested Superman still acts like an unofficial member, Gunn agreed:
“Yeah he is like a team member. But he’s an independent guy our Clark.”

Gunn Defends Krypto’s Name — and Explains Why He’s Not a Public Pup
Another fan joked that naming Superman’s dog “Krypto” was lazy writing. Gunn defended the name:
If I were stranded on a different planet, and my dog was the only reminder I had of home, I might choose to name him ‘Eartho’ as a tribute.
When inquired about how Clark might present Krypto without revealing his secret identity, Gunn provided a more ominous suggestion.
“Our Krypto can’t meet people like that because he might tear them apart.”
Upcoming DCU releases
Peacemaker season 2 will premiere on Thursday, August 21, 2025, on HBO Max.
Up next from the DCU films is Supergirl out June 26, 2026.
