Guillermo del Toro Says His FRANKENSTEIN Is Not a Horror Movie

It’s clear that we’re really looking forward to Guillermo del Toro‘s take on Frankenstein, set to release on Netflix in November 2025. In this adaptation, Oscar Isaac portrays the quirky doctor, with Mia Goth and Jacob Elordi joining him. Contrary to popular belief, it seems that this isn’t going to be a horror movie filled with frightening scenes, as suggested by the director himself. Instead, del Toro has promised a unique interpretation of the classic story, one that may still leave us feeling uneasy but in a different way, as reported by Variety.

Instead of focusing on the frightening elements, the film will emphasize the emotional dimensions of Frankenstein’s life and his creation process. When asked at the Cannes Film Festival about potential scary scenes, del Toro responded, “For the first time, I thought about that. This story is deeply emotional for me. It’s as personal as anything I’ve ever worked on. I’m exploring questions about fatherhood, sonship… I’m not making a horror movie – never have, and I don’t intend to.

I must say, there’s something about this tale that screams for a deep dive into its depths. Guess what? Del Toru excels at weaving horror, eerie atmospheres, and profound themes together seamlessly.

Although Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of “Frankenstein” won’t be a traditional gory or frightening horror movie, it promises to offer an emotionally engaging voyage for its audience.
