Here we are again, dear diary, at the intersection of aspiration and mild panic. I’ve decided to take my $200-a sum that feels both thrillingly substantial and laughably modest-and invest it in what I hope will be two long-term winners: Unity Software (U) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). It’s a bit like deciding between two suitors, except these ones come with quarterly earnings reports instead of flowers.
Entry 1: Unity Software – A Comeback Story That Feels Like My Life
Let me begin by saying this: Unity Software is the kind of stock you root for, even if its recent history makes you want to bury your head under the covers. Picture this: a company whose CEO, Matthew Bromberg, has basically declared, “We’re back!” after an ill-fated attempt to charge developers a Runtime Fee-a move so unpopular it could’ve been pulled straight from one of my own misguided life decisions.
Units of Growth Observed: 3. Days Spent Researching AI Platforms: Too Many. Hours Wondering If I Should Just Stick to Index Funds: Infinite.
But here’s the thing about Unity-it’s got grit. The Create Solutions segment, which includes their game engine, actually grew revenue last quarter thanks to some big customer wins and subscription growth. Meanwhile, the Grow Solutions segment (advertising) stumbled slightly but showed promise with Vector, their shiny new AI-powered ad platform. Revenue there ticked up 15% compared to Q1, which felt like a small victory amidst chaos.
For Q3, Unity predicts mid-single-digit growth in advertising while warning investors not to expect another blockbuster quarter from Create Solutions. Overall revenue guidance sits between $440 million and $450 million-numbers that don’t scream “overnight millionaire,” but do whisper, “steady growth.” And honestly? Steady growth sounds pretty good right now.
The truth is, Unity isn’t perfect. But neither am I, and yet here I am, still trying. Their game engine dominates the industry, switching costs are high, and Vector might just fix years of advertising woes. As investments go, it feels like buying into potential rather than perfection. And sometimes, that’s enough.
Entry 2: AMD – The Underdog Who Keeps Winning
Ah, AMD. The eternal runner-up who somehow manages to keep stealing market share from Intel like a particularly charming younger sibling. Let’s face it: Intel used to be untouchable. Now? They’re more like… well, me on a bad day. Flustered, inconsistent, and occasionally embarrassing themselves.
Market Share Gained: Impressive. Times I’ve Googled “Ryzen vs Intel”: More Than I Care to Admit. Number of Times I’ve Told My Friends About AMD’s Progress: At Least Five.
Take the server CPU market, for example. In Q2 of 2025, AMD snagged a whopping 27.3% unit share and a staggering 41% revenue share. Eight years ago, Intel practically owned the space. Fast forward to today, and AMD’s Ryzen CPUs have become the belle of the ball, outshining Intel’s Raptor Lake chips and lackluster Arrow Lake launch.
And then there’s AMD’s foray into AI accelerators. Sure, they’re nowhere near Nvidia, but let’s not forget: Nvidia didn’t start as a titan either. AMD’s Instinct GPUs are already raking in billions annually, and with AI demand showing no signs of slowing, this division could explode into something truly massive. Tens of billions in annual revenue? Someone pinch me.
Of course, risks abound. What if Intel suddenly gets its act together? Or worse, what if the AI boom fizzles faster than my New Year’s resolutions? Still, AMD strikes me as the kind of company that thrives on adversity. They’ve proven themselves resilient, innovative, and-dare I say it?-kind of sexy in a tech-underdog sort of way.
All things considered, I think I’ll stick around for the ride. After all, investing in AMD feels a bit like cheering for the underdog who keeps surprising everyone-including themselves.
Final thoughts: Investing is hard. Balancing optimism with realism is harder. But hey, if nothing else, at least I’m learning. 🌟
