‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Stars Who Left the Show: Where Are They Now?

Over its many seasons, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has featured a large number of actors who have come and gone. Viewers often become invested in the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial, making it bittersweet when characters leave the show to pursue other opportunities. Several of these actors have gone on to have successful careers in movies and other TV shows, while some have focused on stage work or directing. Looking at what they’re doing now shows they’re all working on a wide variety of projects in the entertainment world.

Patrick Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey left the medical drama after playing Dr. Derek Shepherd for eleven seasons. He then pursued his passion for auto racing and took on film roles, including appearing in ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’. Dempsey later returned to TV with the series ‘Devils’ and the movie ‘Disenchanted’, and most recently starred as Piero Taruffi in the sports biopic ‘Ferrari’.

Sandra Oh

After ten seasons playing Dr. Cristina Yang, Sandra Oh moved on to explore different acting roles. She received widespread praise and several awards for her leading role in the thriller series ‘Killing Eve’. More recently, she’s lent her voice to animated films like ‘Over the Moon’ and ‘Turning Red’, and appeared in the comedy film ‘Quiz Lady’ as well as the series ‘The Sympathizer’.

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl left the show Grey’s Anatomy during its sixth season after playing Dr. Izzie Stevens. She then focused on romantic comedies before returning to TV with the legal drama Suits. More recently, she starred in and produced the two-season drama Firefly Lane. Her next project is the thriller That’s Amore, where she’ll be acting alongside John Travolta.

Justin Chambers

Justin Chambers was a core cast member on the medical drama for sixteen seasons, playing Dr. Alex Karev. He decided to leave the show to pursue a wider range of acting opportunities and focus on his personal life. Recently, he took on the role of Marlon Brando in the miniseries ‘The Offer’, which tells the story of how ‘The Godfather’ was made. T.R. Knight

T.R. Knight departed his role as Dr. George O’Malley on the show to focus on stage acting. He later appeared in TV shows like ‘The Good Wife’ and the miniseries ‘11.22.63’. I was a huge fan of Jesse Williams as Dr. Jackson Avery on Grey’s Anatomy for twelve seasons, and I’ve been so impressed watching his career take off since then! He’s really proven himself as a versatile performer. Seeing him on Broadway in ‘Take Me Out’ and getting a Tony nomination was amazing, and I loved his recent appearance in ‘Only Murders in the Building’ with Martin Short and Steve Martin. It’s also cool that he’s directing TV episodes and starring in movies like ‘Your Place or Mine’ – he’s clearly someone with a lot of talent and drive!

Jessica Capshaw

Jessica Capshaw is known for her ten-year role as Dr. Arizona Robbins on a popular medical drama. After leaving the show, she took some time to focus on her family, then returned to acting with the romantic comedy ‘Holidate’. More recently, she appeared in the first season of the series ‘Tell Me Lies’ and teamed up with a former colleague, Camilla Luddington, to launch a podcast called ‘Call It What It Is’.

Isaiah Washington

Isaiah Washington left the show ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ after season three, where he played heart surgeon Dr. Preston Burke.
