Gremlins 3 Announced for 2027 With Spielberg and Columbus Returning

Warner Bros. has announced a third Gremlins movie, which will be the first live-action film in the series in almost 30 years. Steven Spielberg returns as an executive producer, and Chris Columbus, who wrote the original movie, will be directing. It’s scheduled to be released in theaters on November 19, 2027.

Spielberg and Columbus Reunite for the Franchise

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced that a third Gremlins movie is in the works, signaling the studio’s commitment to releasing major films in theaters. Chris Columbus, who wrote the original 1984 Gremlins, will direct and produce the sequel. Steven Spielberg is also returning as a producer through his company, Amblin Entertainment, just as he did with the first Gremlins film.

This screenplay originated in Columbus and was written by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, who previously worked on Final Destination: Bloodlines. An earlier version was drafted by Toby Halbrooks and Carl Ellsworth, but the final writing credits are still being determined.

Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario of Amblin, along with Columbus, Michael Barnathan, and Mark Radcliffe of 26th Street Pictures, served as producers on the project.

First Live-Action Installment Since 1990

The 1984 film Gremlins was a huge success, becoming a pop-culture phenomenon and earning $165 million worldwide despite only costing $11 million to make. The 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, was very different – it was a satirical take on the first film and earned only $41 million. Over time, it gained a dedicated following and is now praised by fans, other filmmakers, and even Quentin Tarantino.

After gauging audience interest with the animated Max prequel Secrets of the Mogwai – which just finished its second season – Warner Bros. has decided to bring the franchise back to the big screen.

Zaslav Uses the Announcement to Sell the “Revived WB” Narrative

David Zaslav highlighted Gremlins 3 as evidence that Warner Bros. is regaining its momentum. He described the studio as a desirable place for creative talent once more, following a period of uncertainty and frequent leadership changes. He also pointed out that Warner Bros. currently leads in both domestic and worldwide box office earnings for the year, despite having no films scheduled for release for the rest of 2025.

As a huge Warner Bros. fan, I’m a little worried about what’s happening behind the scenes. It sounds like the company is getting a lot of attention from potential buyers, and apparently, Paramount and Skydance have even made official offers to buy them. It’s looking like WB might be sold completely, or possibly broken up into two separate companies. Either way, this would be the fourth time in just ten years that Warner Bros. has been under new ownership – it’s a lot of change, and I’m hoping it all works out for the best!

What the New Movie Means for the Franchise

After 37 years, a new Gremlins movie is on the way! The return of Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus suggests it will recapture the original film’s spooky and funny vibe, unlike the more satirical style of Gremlins 2. With Columbus directing, viewers can anticipate a return to the dark humor and thrilling monster-movie feel that first made the adorable Mogwai so popular.

Warner Bros. wants to bring back Gremlins, hoping to excite both loyal fans and a new audience, as they focus on creating more popular movies for theaters.
