Green Lantern Series Sounds Weird

As the DCU “Lanterns” series begins its production, it’s being described as an “unconventional and mature” series.

The info comes via scooper Daniel RPK via X who apparently didn’t go into details.

How could Lanterns be adult and weird?

As a fan, I must admit that the news about the DCU Lanterns series potentially being adult and peculiar isn’t shocking at all. In fact, it aligns perfectly with James Gunn’s distinctive style seen in his Creature Commandos animated series, which served as an introduction to the DC Universe. What’s more, the Lanterns series is penned by Damon Lindelof and Tom King – a combination that, to be honest, sets off some warning signals for me too.

The official synopsis places the series in the heart of America, specifically on Earth, as Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart delve into an unsolved murder.

The storyline focuses on two interstellar police officers, John Stewart (a fresh recruit) and Hal Jordan (an established Green Lantern), who become embroiled in a sinister, homegrown case when they’re called to solve a murder in the Midwest of America.

Lanterns sounds woke

In contrast, various depictions suggest that the older Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler at 59) isn’t particularly enthusiastic about collaborating with the younger John Stewart (Aaron Pierre who is 30). Much like Gunn did with Creature Commandos, there are whispers of the storyline for Lanterns including controversial themes that may be integrated into the program.

According to recent reports, it appears that the town where the Lanterns are investigating is predominantly inhabited by individuals with racist views. It’s been suggested that one of the residents, an older woman of Indian descent, is married to a racist and lives among racists. Additionally, it seems that John Stewart, a younger character, develops feelings for this woman who appears to be the only African American person in the entire town. The accuracy of these potential storyline details has been supported by the casting of Poorna Jagannathan, a 52-year-old Indian actress, in the role.

The remaining characters in the show feature Kelly McDonald, age 49, portraying Sheriff Kerry (empowered female character), Garret Dillahunt, aged 60, as Garrett William, a racist white husband named William Macon. He is characterized as a contemporary cowboy and a person who hides his relentless ambition under a friendly and calculated exterior, with an additional label of being a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded individual.

61-year-old Ulrich Thomsen is likewise cast as Sinestro, while it seems quite unusual for Nathan Fillion to portray Green Lantern Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman film.
