GreedFall: The Dying World is a role-playing game inspired by classic RPGs, and it’s set three years before the events of the popular game GreedFall. Originally planned as a sequel, the developers, Spiders, decided to remove the ‘2’ from the title during early testing. Over the past eighteen months of development, they’ve made significant changes – far beyond just a name change – including improvements to the game’s systems, visuals, and locations. Here are fifteen things you should know before purchasing the full version of GreedFall: The Dying World.
GreedFall: The Dying World is a role-playing game inspired by classic RPGs, and it’s set three years before the events of the original GreedFall. Originally planned as GreedFall 2, the developers, Spiders, decided to remove the ‘2’ from the title during its development. Over the past eighteen months of early access, they’ve made significant improvements – far beyond just a name change. These include redesigned gameplay systems, visual updates, and new areas to explore. Here are fifteen things you should know before purchasing the full release of GreedFall: The Dying World.
Overhauled “Real-Time With Pause” Combat
A major change in GreedFall: The Dying World compared to the first game is its new combat system. Instead of focusing purely on action, it now uses a “real-time with pause” approach, inspired by classic RPGs like Dragon Age: Origins and Knights of the Old Republic. While some players weren’t thrilled with the initial early access version – describing it as clunky and outdated – the developers at Spiders have continued to refine the system. They’ve focused on making it smoother, offering more ways to customize your playstyle, and adding a target lock feature. The true test of these improvements will come when players experience the fully released version 1.0 and see how the dynamic action and tactical pauses work within the complete game.
Tactical Party Control
Unlike the original game, The Dying World lets you directly control what each of your characters does, giving you more strategic options in battle. Each character has Action Points that you decide how to use – whether to perform skills, heal, or use special abilities – during pauses in the fighting. You can also switch between controlling different characters right in the middle of combat.
The Story Is Complete
The current early access version is about 30% of the complete game, and takes players from the island of Teer Fradee to the city of Olima in the main questline. We initially found the first hour of the story a bit slow in our September 2024 review. While an update in November added a new area and continued the main quest, the overall story still needs some polish before the full release (version 1.0). Hopefully, the complete adventure across the Old Continent will live up to its potential when it’s finished.
New Disguise System Facilitates Stealth
In GreedFall: The Dying World, you can use disguises to sneak into enemy locations, acting like one of them to avoid fights. This Disguise System lets you bypass combat by wearing the armor of a specific faction while you’re within their territory. How well your disguises work depends on the quality of your gear and how you’ve developed your stealth skills.
Revamped Armour System
The armour system has been completely redesigned and will be fully implemented in the upcoming 1.0 update, following an initial overhaul in the 0.3 update last November. Originally, armour protected against physical and magical damage separately, which players found confusing and limiting. Taking inspiration from the first GreedFall game, the developers have simplified the system, allowing for more strategic options and team-based benefits. Now, armour reduces physical damage taken, and magical deflection provides extra health while lessening magical damage.
Gear Crafting and Upgrading are New Additions
I’m really excited about the new crafting system in The Dying World! Before, we could only make things to use in fights or for healing, but now we can actually build weapons from the ground up. It feels amazing to take down enemies with a sword I personally forged! You’ll find workbenches all over the world where you can upgrade and create weapons, as long as you have the skills and materials. You can even break down old weapons to get resources. And if you’re not a crafting expert, don’t worry – blacksmiths are available to make your weapon for a price. It’s a fantastic addition!
There’s a New City Beyond Olima — Peren

A new city called Peren will be available to explore in the full version of GreedFall: The Dying World. It’s a beautiful city with tall, gothic buildings and misty hills, but it’s troubled by corrupt nobles and a spreading plague. Beneath the city lies a network of catacombs, offering plenty of side quests and things to discover beyond the main storyline.
There Are Two New Companions
Two new characters, Safia and Till, joined the game in March’s 0.2 update and are ready to travel with you. Safia is skilled with ranged weapons like muskets, and acts as a wise, motherly figure, offering advice to the group. Till is a strong and dependable defender, loyal to the very end.
Character Creator has Been Greatly Expanded
When The Dying World first launched in early access, its character creation tools were quite limited. But with the full game (version 1.0) almost here, players who enjoy detailed character customization will be very pleased. There are now tons of options, with sliders to fine-tune everything from eyes and nose shape to mouth and chin. You can even add details like scars to create a unique backstory. If you prefer, you can also quickly generate a random character or choose from a variety of pre-made designs.
New, Overarching Antagonist — Kurnaz

Kurnaz, revealed in January, is a compelling but ruthless villain who will challenge players throughout their journey in the Old Continent. He leads a power-hungry group within the Bridge Alliance and has quickly risen to prominence, fueled by a strong belief in his own superiority and a desire to defeat anyone who stands in his way. While details of his story are still secret, his origins seem to fit perfectly within the intricate and mysterious world Spiders has built for this new game.
Visual and Performance Upgrades Arrived Throughout Early Access
Since the game launched in early access, the Spiders team has been listening to player feedback about how The Dying World looks. They’ve been working hard to improve the game engine, adding more detailed environments, smoother character movements, and realistic lighting. Along with these visual upgrades, they’ve also fixed many bugs to boost the game’s performance.
Photomode Will Be Included
The November update added a popular feature that players have been asking for: a full-featured photomode! You’ll be able to take stunning photos with options like adjusting shutter speed, blur, and exposure. It’s perfect for capturing the beauty of the game world, especially when exploring places like the streets of Peren at sunset.
“Game Profiles” are Selectable Playstyles
As a huge fan, I’m really excited about the new Game Profiles! Basically, when you start a new game, you can now pick a profile that shapes how you want to play. You can choose a playstyle – like “Tactical” if you love combat, “Focused” if you’re all about the characters, or a “Hybrid” for a bit of everything. Then, you can tweak everything – difficulty, how much the story matters, camera speed, even if you want to be invincible! It’s awesome because you can customize the game exactly to your liking before you even hit ‘start’. It’s a really cool community-driven feature.
Custom Save Files are Being Removed

Custom Save Files let you start the game at specific points – allowing you to skip the beginning, try out late-game features, or focus solely on new content. These were added during the early access period to help developers gather focused feedback on different parts of the game. However, they won’t be available in the final released version, as that need has now passed with the end of early access.
Release Date, Platforms, Price, and PC Requirements
Okay, so I’ve been following GreedFall: The Dying World and it’s officially launching on March 12th! I’m excited because it’s coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and I’ve already been playing it on PC through Steam Early Access. Just a heads-up, the full game will cost more than the early access version. Right now, pre-orders on consoles are around £49.99/$59.99 for the standard edition, and £59.99/$69.99 for the deluxe. But the good news is, if you buy it during the early access period, you’ll automatically get the full game when it launches!
To run GreedFall: The Dying World comfortably, you’ll need at least an Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X processor, a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT graphics card, and 16GB of RAM. For a better experience, we recommend an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X processor, and a Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti or AMD Radeon 6700XT graphics card. The game requires 30GB of free storage space.
