Gracie Lawrence Explains How Her Sex Lives Of College Girls Role Isn’t Replacing Reneé Rapp’s Leighton

As a dedicated fan who’s been following The Sex Lives of College Girls since its inception, I must say I’m excited about the new additions to the cast in Season 3. Gracie Lawrence joining as Kacey is not just a fresh face, but a breath of fresh air that promises to bring a unique dynamic to the group.

As a new addition to the ensemble of The Sex Lives of College Girls, I, Gracie Lawrence, have shared insights into my character, Kacey, for Season 3 of this much-adored Max comedy series.

It’s been observed that fans have missed Reneé Rapp’s character, Leighton, who departed from Essex College for MIT. However, when asked about this, Lawrence clarified that Kacey, the new character being introduced, is not intended to replace Rapp’s role. Instead, Lawrence mentioned that the show is venturing into something new and exciting with Kacey, signifying a fresh start for the series.

During an interview with Us Weekly, Lawrence emphasized that Kacey isn’t intended to simply take over the role of Leighton. “I believe Kacey is quite distinct from Leighton’s character,” Lawrence stated.

She went on to explain, “There was no desire for anyone to feel as if it was usurping [her] or anything similar because that character is iconic.” She further mentioned that Leighton is an iconic role and everyone involved in the show’s creation or acting would be careful not to tread on its significance.

In the narrative of Season 3, Leighton bid farewell to Essex College, choosing instead to delve deeper into a challenging academic curriculum at MIT.

The vacancy in the shared suite was once occupied by Leighton, Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott). Kacey, portrayed by Lawrence, moves in as a fresh roommate, bringing a high-maintenance and virginal vibe to the group, adding a new twist to their dynamics.

This season, I’m not just meeting Kacey for the first time; we’re also getting acquainted with Mia Rodgers as Taylor, a new character who is both queer and sober, and happens to be a freshman. Lawrence’s presence is still here, too.

Lawrence pointed out that the fresh faces joining the cast were integral to maintaining the series’ vibrancy. Remarkably, she mentioned that the showrunners aim to innovate by incorporating characters such as Kacey and Taylor into their storylines.

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but notice Lawrence’s nod to the legacy of our beloved characters, especially Leighton. It’s truly heartening to see how they’re carefully expanding the cast with such reverence for the remarkable impact Rapp had on the show.

Renee Rapp left the show in July 2023, coinciding with the start of her Snow Hard Feelings Tour which aimed to publicize her first studio album titled Snow Angel.

The announcement of Rapp leaving the series marked a substantial change, given that her character, Leighton, was widely adored by fans. Yet, it’s been clarified by the show’s producers that Leighton’s tale isn’t completely finished.

Previously, during an interview, Sex Lives of College Girls’ co-creator Justin Noble hinted that there are still some lessons for Leighton to learn and areas for her to expand upon in the future.
