As a theater enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the art of auditioning, I can wholeheartedly admire Ethan Slater‘s audacious approach to landing his role in Wicked. His bold decision to play not one, but three characters in his audition tape was nothing short of ingenious. It’s as if he took the words “triple threat” literally!
Ethan Slater excelled in his audition for the Wicked musical by assuming multiple roles, namely Boq, Glinda (originally played by Ariana Grande), and Nessarose (previously portrayed by Marissa Bode). In a conversation with People magazine, Slater reminisced about his Wicked audition experience.
In my role as a lifestyle expert, I recently took part in two captivating scenes and belted out Boq’s enchanting tunes, ‘The Ozdust Ballroom’ and ‘March of the Witch Hunters.’ This is for an upcoming movie project. Interestingly, during the recording, there was no one present to deliver lines with me, so I found myself playing Glinda and Nessarose off-camera while reading my own lines on camera for the video submission.
In a bold move, Slater played three characters in his audition tape, and later commented, “I can’t believe I pulled it off.” Realizing he needed ample time to work on the script, he admitted, “I couldn’t find someone to join me in this effort, so I ended up doing it alone.
Slater’s additional hard work ultimately led to his securing the role in the lavish movie version of the popular Broadway musical “Wicked.” Interestingly enough, this was a significant triumph for him since he had previously auditioned for the part of Boq on Broadway but didn’t make the cut.
However, he later bagged the title role in the musical version of the hit Nickelodeon television series Spongebob Squarepants, which earned him a Tony Award nomination. The much-awaited Wicked film, adapted from the Tony-winning Broadway musical, stars Cynthia Erivo and Grande in the lead roles of Elphaba and Glinda, respectively.
In the magical Land of Oz at Shiz University, the green-skinned Elphaba and the well-liked Glinda form an unlikely friendship. Following an encounter with the powerful Wizard of Oz, their bond faces a crucial test, as suggested by the movie’s summary. The impressive cast boasts talents like Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, Bowen Yang, Keala Settle, and numerous others.
Wicked will be released in theaters on November 22.
