LaLa Anthony, a well-known figure on TV, tied the knot with basketball star Carmelo Anthony in 2010 following a seven-year courtship. However, they went their separate ways in 2017, briefly reconciled but eventually finalized their divorce in 2021. Interestingly, even three years after the divorce, LaLa continues to carry his last name.
As a devoted follower, I find myself in a unique situation where, despite our separation, my former partner and I have managed to maintain a harmonious relationship. Our primary focus has always been, and continues to be, our beloved son Kiyan. We’ve both made an effort to ensure that we attend his sports events together, fostering a sense of unity for him.
More recently, La La Anthony participated in a discussion at the Fanatics Fest held in New York City over the weekend. During this event, she expressed that her son’s passion for sports and his aspirations to make a name for himself in the NBA realm have led her to retain her well-known surname. This decision is not about her former spouse, Carmelo, but rather about her son. She playfully mentioned, “I haven’t altered my last name yet, but I plan on keeping it around for some time!”
In New York, Kiyan is the highest-ranked high school basketball player. When asked if it would be tough for her to support another team if Kiyan gets transferred elsewhere, La La responded, “Not too challenging! I’m afraid; I go where my child goes! Whichever team my child joins, that’s the one I’ll cheer for.” She elaborated, “Things change when it’s your kid. It’s a completely different experience. It feels like embarking on an entirely new adventure with him.”
Previously on Total Request Live, the host shared an insight about Kiyan. Despite following his father’s path in basketball, Kiyan prefers to stay out of the limelight. Anthony elaborated further, saying that Kiyan dislikes being in front of the camera: “He’s been around it all his life, so he’s accustomed to it, but he’s also a very humble boy.”
La La shared that Kiyan Anthony has shown an impressive level of groundedness and humility, as evidenced by his response to his father’s fame. She expressed her amazement at the thought of growing up with parents in the limelight, or seeing people wearing his father’s jersey and going wild wherever he goes. However, Kiyan remains remarkably calm, humble, and focused on learning the game, eager to put in the work and grow as a student.
But whatever it is, the mother and son share a very strong and protective bond. La La even once admitted how her son has been quite possessive about her dating life. When she had asked her son whether he wanted to see his mother single all her life, he had jokingly replied, “Kind of.”
